Overview
SolidWorks is parametric mechanical design: sketches driven by dimensions and relations, features built on those sketches, and a history tree you can go back and change with the whole part rebuilding around the edit. Assemblies mate parts together with real constraints, drawings derive from the model and stay associated with it, and the whole thing is aimed squarely at parts that will be manufactured.
Premium is the top edition and this build carries it in full: simulation for stress and motion, routing for pipe, tube and electrical runs, sheet metal and weldment environments, and the full drawing and detailing tools. Licensing is applied offline, so there is no network licence manager and no activation server to reach.
Parts and assemblies
Part modelling is feature based and fully parametric. The discipline that pays off is capturing design intent in the relations rather than the dimensions, so that when a diameter changes everything that should follow it does. Configurations hold variants of the same part in one file, which is how a family of sizes is handled without twelve separate models.
Assemblies mate components with real degrees of freedom, so a mechanism can be dragged through its motion to check clearance and travel. Large assembly mode and lightweight components keep a several thousand part model workable on ordinary hardware.
Simulation, sheet metal and routing
Simulation covers static stress, frequency, buckling and motion studies, run against the model with materials and fixtures applied directly rather than in a separate program. It is not a replacement for dedicated analysis on a critical part, but it catches the obvious problems early, which is where most of the value is.
The sheet metal environment models parts as they will be folded and unfolds them to a flat pattern with correct bend allowances, ready for a punch or a laser. Weldments handle structural members from a profile library with automatic trimming and a cut list. Routing builds pipe, tube and electrical runs through an assembly with real fittings.
Drawings and data
Drawings derive from the model and update with it, with sectioning, detail views, dimensioning, tolerancing and bills of materials that count what is actually in the assembly. Drawing templates and sheet formats carry a house standard.
The import and export list covers the neutral solid exchange formats along with the native formats of the other major mechanical packages, which is what makes it possible to accept a supplier model without asking them to change systems.

Installing it
- Free up at least 60 GB before starting. The installer expands well beyond the archive size.
- Suspend real time protection for the whole install.
- Run setup as administrator and choose the components you actually need to save time.
- Apply the licensing step from the notes before the first launch.
- Open a new part and confirm the simulation and routing tabs are present.

Questions about this release
Is simulation included?
Yes. This is the Premium edition, so simulation, routing and the full toolset are present.
Does it need a licence server?
No. Licensing is offline in this build.
Do I need a workstation graphics card?
Not strictly, but a certified card removes a whole category of display faults in large assemblies. A consumer card will work for smaller models.
Can it open files from other mechanical packages?
Yes, both the neutral exchange formats and the native formats of the other major packages.

Sixteen gigabytes, took an evening, but Premium is genuinely all there including simulation.
Opened a supplier's native file from another package without a conversion step. Saved a lot of back and forth.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
Flat patterns match what comes off our press brake. That fix was needed.
