Overview
Office 2021 Professional Plus is the perpetual release that sits between the settled 2019 build and the subscription channel. It adds the newer Excel function set, the reworked interface with a proper dark mode, and better handling of the collaborative editing features, while still being a one time install that does not sign you in or change under you.
This is the volume channel image with activation applied during install, offered as a direct download and as a magnet. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Publisher are all present in both 32 and 64 bit, with the language chosen during setup.
What changed from 2019
Excel gained the dynamic array functions in their finished form, along with the lookup and text handling functions that make most older nested formulas unnecessary. If you have inherited a workbook full of index and match chains, this is the version where they can be replaced with something readable.
The interface received a genuine visual pass with a dark mode that applies to the document canvas rather than just the surrounding chrome, and the ribbon layout was tightened. Outlook improved its search speed noticeably on large mailboxes, which is the change most people notice first.
Compatibility
File formats are unchanged, so documents move between 2019, 2021 and the subscription builds without conversion. Features that do not exist in an older version degrade gracefully rather than breaking the file, with the usual caveat that a formula using a newer function will show an error on a machine that does not have it.
Macros and add-ins carry over. The 64-bit build is the right choice unless a specific old add-in or database driver forces 32-bit, and the two cannot be installed together.
Activation
Activation runs through the volume channel path during install, so the suite reports as licensed on first launch with no key and no account. It does not carry an expiry.

Installing it
- Remove any existing Office first, including a leftover subscription install.
- Unpack or mount the image on a local drive.
- Run the installer as administrator and choose 64-bit unless an add-in forces otherwise.
- Pick the interface language when prompted.
- Open Excel once and confirm the account panel shows the product as activated.

Questions about this release
Can it open files from the subscription version?
Yes. The formats are the same. A formula using a function that does not exist in 2021 will show an error, which is normal behaviour rather than a fault.
Does it expire?
No. It is a perpetual licence and the activation does not carry a timer.

What if activation does not take?
Clear the previous Office licence state, or run the standalone activation tool listed on this site.

Activated during install, nothing to do afterwards. Outlook picked up my accounts fine.
Had a leftover subscription install fighting it. Removed that, reinstalled, all good.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
Dark mode across the whole document area is worth the upgrade from 2019 on its own.
