Overview
Origin is what a lab uses when a spreadsheet stops being enough. The starting point is familiar, a worksheet of columns, but every column carries units, a long name and a comment, and every graph stays connected to the data that produced it. Change a value and the fit, the graph and the analysis report all update, which is the single feature that turns a one off analysis into something reproducible.
OriginPro is the larger of the two editions and adds the advanced statistics, peak analysis, surface fitting, signal processing and image handling on top of the base program. This build has the licensing handled, so there is no license server, no seat check and no evaluation stamp on exported graphics. The full app library and the analysis templates are included.
Graphing that is actually publishable
The graph type list runs to over a hundred, covering the usual line, scatter and column charts and then continuing into contour, ternary, polar, wind rose, box, violin, waterfall, Piper and vector plots. Every element of a graph is editable down to the tick label rotation and the individual data point, and a finished graph can be saved as a template and applied to a different dataset in one step.
Export goes out at a chosen resolution in the vector and raster formats journals ask for, with font embedding and colour space control. Multi panel layouts arrange several graphs on a page with shared axes and consistent sizing, which is what a figure in a paper usually needs and what most tools make painful.
Analysis with a recalculation chain
Every analysis in Origin can be set to recalculate automatically, manually or never. Set it to automatic and the whole chain from raw data through baseline correction, peak fitting and integration to the final graph updates when the input changes. This is what makes the batch system work: run a template over a folder of data files and get the same analysis and the same figures for every one.
Curve fitting covers linear, polynomial, nonlinear with a large built in function library, and user defined functions with your own parameters and constraints. Fit reports include the parameter values, standard errors, the fit statistics and the residual plots that tell you whether the fit means anything.
The OriginPro additions
Peak analysis handles multi peak detection, baseline subtraction, deconvolution of overlapping peaks and integration, which is the daily work of a spectroscopy or chromatography lab. Surface fitting extends the same approach to three dimensional data.
Statistics includes ANOVA in its variants, nonparametric tests, survival analysis, power and sample size calculation, multivariate methods such as principal component and cluster analysis, and ROC curves. Signal processing covers smoothing, filtering, Fourier and short time Fourier transforms, wavelets and correlation.
Importing, apps and automation
Import handles the formats instruments actually produce, which is a long and unglamorous list, alongside spreadsheets, text, databases and the common scientific data formats. Import filters can be saved so that a particular instrument's output opens correctly every time without reconfiguring the delimiters.
The app framework adds task specific tools to the program, and the bundled set covers a lot of common analyses. For anything beyond that there is a built in scripting language, Python integration, and automation from external programs, so Origin can sit inside a larger pipeline rather than being a place data goes to stop.

Installing it
- Unpack the archive to a path without spaces or accented characters.
- Turn off real time protection before installing.
- Run setup as administrator and choose the full install including the app library.
- Apply the licensing step from the readme before launching.
- Open a sample project and export a graph to confirm there is no evaluation stamp on the output.

What does Pro add over the standard edition?
Peak analysis, surface fitting, the advanced statistics, signal processing and image tools. All of it is active here.
Does it need a license server?
No. The licensing is handled in the build, so there is nothing to configure and nothing to check out.
Can I automate it from another program?
Yes. There is a scripting language, Python integration and an automation interface for driving it externally.
Will graphs export at journal resolution?
Yes, at any resolution you specify, in vector and raster formats with font embedding and colour space control.

Import filter for our instrument saved and it opens correctly every time now. Small thing, huge time saver.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
Batch ran a whole week of runs through the same peak fit template. Figures came out identical in style, which is the point.
