Overview

Nitro was designed for the person who spends their day in a document suite and needs PDF work to feel like part of that day rather than a detour into unfamiliar software. The ribbon is laid out the way an office suite's is, the terminology matches, and the common operations sit where you would expect them without hunting. For an office rolling something out to people who are not going to read a manual, that familiarity is worth more than any individual feature.

This is the Enterprise edition with the licensing settled ahead of time, which includes the batch processing tools, the deployment configuration options, the digital signature workflow and the full conversion engine. Documents save and print without a watermark of any kind, the trial period does not exist, and the updater has been removed from this build.

Creating and converting

A virtual printer is installed, so anything that can print can produce a PDF, which remains the most reliable route from any obscure application. Alongside that, plug-ins for the office suite create tagged documents that keep bookmarks, hyperlinks and heading structure intact rather than flattening everything to a picture of a page.

Conversion out of PDF covers the word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and image formats. The word processor conversion in particular preserves tables, columns and lists well enough that the result is genuinely editable rather than a pile of text boxes. Batch conversion runs a whole folder at once with a single settings profile, which is the feature that justifies the Enterprise tier for most buyers.

Editing and review

Text edits at the paragraph level with font matching, and images can be replaced or repositioned directly. Page operations cover insert, delete, rotate, crop, extract, split and merge, and documents can be combined with a drag and drop ordering screen that handles dozens of files without becoming unusable.

The review side has the full annotation set with author tracking, and comments can be summarised into a separate document for circulation. Document comparison marks the differences between two revisions. Text recognition converts scans into searchable documents and can process a folder of them unattended, which is how a filing cabinet's worth of paper becomes findable.

Signing, forms and protection

The signature workflow covers both a drawn or typed signature applied to a page and cryptographic signing with a certificate, including validation of signatures already on a document. A signing request can be prepared with fields placed for each party, which is the arrangement most contract routines need.

Forms can be designed from scratch or recognised automatically from a flat document, with calculated fields and validation. Protection covers password encryption with granular permissions, and redaction that removes the underlying content and clears the associated metadata rather than merely obscuring it visually.

Questions about this release

How does it differ from the other PDF editors here?

Mostly in feel. The interface follows office suite conventions closely, which makes it the easier one to hand to someone who will not read instructions.

Does batch processing need the Enterprise edition?

Yes, and this build is that edition, so folder wide conversion and recognition are available.

Is there a watermark on saved files?

No. The licensing is settled here and output is clean, saved or printed.

Do I have to install the office plug-ins?

No. Choose the custom install and deselect them. The virtual printer is separate and worth keeping.

Rolled this out to a small office and nobody asked me a single question about how to use it. That never happens.

Batch converted about 400 scanned pages to searchable documents overnight. Worked without babysitting.

Conversion to a word processor kept the tables intact, which is the only test I care about. Passed.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
