Overview

Every other PDF reader is measured against this one, and for good reason: it is written by the people who defined the format, so when a document renders differently somewhere else, this is the program that settles the argument. Complex documents with layers, transparency groups, embedded fonts, attachments and interactive form logic display here the way they were built to, which is not something every lightweight alternative can claim.

This is the full offline installer rather than the small web stub, so it installs on a machine with no connection and installs the same way every time. The updater service and the background helper processes have been removed from this build, which means it does not sit in the tray, does not add scheduled tasks, and does not replace itself with a newer version while you are not looking. It reads and annotates documents. It does not edit them, and the entries on this site for the editing programs are listed separately.

Reading and navigation

The viewer handles the things that trip up simpler readers: documents with hundreds of pages open without loading them all, bookmark trees and nested outlines navigate properly, layers can be toggled on documents that carry them, and attached files embedded inside a document can be opened rather than ignored. Text reflow makes a dense page readable on a narrow window, and the accessibility reading order can be inspected on documents that were tagged correctly.

Search covers the current document or a whole folder of them at once, with results grouped by file, which is the fastest way to find a clause across a stack of contracts or a figure across a set of reports. Scanned documents that carry a text layer are searchable in the same pass.

Comments, forms and signatures

The commenting toolset is complete: highlight, strikethrough, sticky notes, freehand drawing, shapes, stamps and text callouts, all of which travel with the file so a reviewed document opens with the markup intact anywhere. The comment list can be filtered by author and exported as a summary, which is how a review cycle with several people stays manageable.

Interactive forms fill and calculate correctly, including the ones with scripted validation that other readers silently skip. Filled forms can be saved with the data in place or flattened. On the signature side, the reader validates existing digital signatures against their certificate chain and reports plainly whether a document has been modified since it was signed, and it can apply a signature of your own from a certificate on the machine.

What has been changed in this build

Three things are removed. The updater service, which otherwise installs a scheduled task and replaces the program periodically. The background helper that keeps part of the program resident after you close a document. And the sign-in prompts for the cloud storage integration, which are not useful without an account and which interrupt the interface when they appear.

Nothing in the rendering or annotation path is touched. The font handling, the colour management and the security warnings on documents that request an external resource all behave exactly as the original does, which matters, because those warnings are the reason a reader is worth trusting in the first place.

Questions about this release

Can it edit the text in a PDF?

No. This is the reader. Editing text, reordering pages and converting to other formats need one of the editor programs listed separately on this site.

Will it update itself?

No. The updater component is not installed, so the build stays where it is until you replace it.

Does it still show security warnings?

Yes, and deliberately so. Nothing in the security or rendering path has been changed.

Can it fill in and save a form?

Yes, with the data preserved. Forms with scripted validation and calculation work correctly here where lighter readers often fail.

No tray icon, no scheduled task, no nagging. This is what the reader should have been all along.

Needed it to validate signed contracts and it reports the chain status clearly. Other readers just said unknown.

Offline installer worked on a machine with no network at all. Set it as default and it has been fine since.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
