Overview
Marvelous Designer took the insight that clothing in three dimensions is easier to make the same way real clothing is made. You draw flat pattern pieces in a 2D window, define the seams that join them, and the simulation drapes them onto a body in the 3D window. A shirt is a set of panels sewn together, not a mesh someone sculpted, and it hangs correctly because the physics works it out rather than because an artist faked the folds.
It has become standard in games, film and animation for exactly that reason, and it is used in actual garment development for the same one. The Enterprise tier includes the full simulation quality settings, the animation caching, the higher polygon export paths and the automation interface. This build is licensed locally with no dongle, no floating licence server and no online check.
Patterns, seams and simulation
The 2D window is a pattern drafting environment: draw panels with lines and curves, add internal shapes for darts and openings, set the grain direction, and mark the seam lines that will join one edge to another. The 3D window shows the result draping in real time, so a change to a pattern updates the garment while you watch rather than after a render.
Fabric properties are physical rather than decorative. Weight, stretch in both directions, bending stiffness, friction and thickness all feed the simulation, and the preset library covers the common materials from chiffon through denim to leather. A garment made from the wrong fabric preset looks wrong in a way that is immediately obvious, which is a good sign that the simulation is doing something real.
Fitting, layering and detail
Avatars can be posed, measured and morphed, and garments fit to whatever body is loaded. Layering is handled properly, so a shirt under a jacket under a coat collide with each other and with the body rather than passing through. Pressure and shrinkage can be applied per panel for fitted or gathered effects.
Detail comes from trims and finishing: buttons, buttonholes, zips that actually open and close in the simulation, elastic, topstitching, pleats held by folds rather than modelled, and puckering along seams. Texture is applied in the 2D pattern space, which means a print lines up across a seam the way it would on a real garment. Normal and displacement detail can be baked from the high resolution simulation onto a lower resolution mesh for game use.
Animation and export
An animated avatar can be brought in and the garment simulated across the motion, with the cloth caching to disk so playback is real time after the first pass. Simulation quality can be set low for blocking and high for the final pass, and wind and other forces can be added. The cache exports as a point cache for use in the rendering package of your choice.
Export covers the common mesh and scene exchange formats with the garment as a quad or triangle mesh, with unwrapped coordinates taken from the pattern, and with the seams preserved as edges. The automation interface in the Enterprise tier allows batch simulation of many garments against many avatars, which is what a production pipeline needs and a single user never touches.

Installing it
- Unpack to a local drive with room for simulation caches.
- Turn off real time protection for the install.
- Run setup as administrator.
- Do not configure a licence server. The state is applied locally and configuring one will override it.
- Launch the application and set the cache folder to a fast drive before running an animated simulation.

Questions about this release
Do I need to know pattern making?
It helps enormously but is not required. The sample garments can be modified, and the pattern logic becomes obvious quickly because the simulation shows you immediately when something is wrong.
Does it need a dongle or a licence server?
No. The licensing is local in this build. Configuring a server will actually break it, so leave that alone.
Can the result go into a game engine?
Yes. Simulate high, bake the detail down to a lower resolution mesh, export with the unwrapped coordinates from the pattern.
Why is my simulation slow?
Layer count and particle distance are the two costs. Drop the simulation quality while you work and raise it only for the final pass.
