Overview

Clip Studio Paint is drawing software built by people who understand drawing, and the difference shows in the parts nobody demos. The stabilisation on a stroke, the way a vector line can have its width edited after it is drawn, the way an inking brush tapers, all of it feels like a pen rather than like a mouse pretending to be one. For comics, illustration and increasingly for 2D animation, it is the default choice among people who do it every day.

EX is the tier with the features that matter for finished work rather than single images, multi page project management, story file handling, batch export for a whole book and the longer animation timeline. This build has the licence applied with no subscription renewal, so nothing expires and nothing needs an account.

Drawing and the brush engine

The brush engine models the physical behaviour of a tool rather than stamping a texture, so a pen tapers with speed and pressure, a watercolour brush pools at the edge of a stroke, and a marker builds up where strokes overlap. Every parameter is exposed if you want to build your own, and the community library of downloadable brushes is enormous.

Vector layers are the feature that pulls illustrators over from other programs. A line drawn on a vector layer can have its width changed, its shape adjusted, or its ends trimmed at an intersection after the fact, using an eraser mode that removes a line up to where it crosses another. For inking, that single behaviour saves more time than any other feature in the program.

Comics, pages and the EX features

Panel layout is a dedicated tool that cuts a page into frames which then act as clipping containers, so artwork stays inside its panel automatically. Speech balloons are objects with tails that can be redirected, text inside them reflows, and the whole set exports with the correct reading order.

EX handles a whole book as one project. Pages are managed together, spreads are handled properly, page numbers and running headers are automatic, and the export runs across every page in one action to print ready files or to the formats digital platforms expect. Story files hold the script alongside the pages, which keeps a long project navigable.

3D reference and animation

The 3D models are a reference tool rather than a rendering feature. Posable figures, hands, and a set of props and backgrounds can be positioned in the canvas and traced over, with the perspective solved correctly. Getting a difficult foreshortened pose right in two minutes instead of an hour is the whole value, and the output is your drawing rather than a render.

The animation timeline supports frame by frame work with onion skinning, a light table for reference frames, camera moves on a 2D plane and export to video or image sequence. EX removes the frame limit that the lower tier imposes, which is what makes it usable for anything beyond a short loop.

Installing it

  1. Install your tablet driver first and confirm pressure works in another program.
  2. Run the installer as administrator.
  3. Apply the licence step from the archive before the first launch.
  4. Open the program and check the title bar shows the EX tier rather than the lower one.
  5. Set your pen pressure curve in the preferences before starting real work.

Questions about this release

What does EX add over the lower tier?

Multi page project handling, story files, batch export across a whole book and the removal of the animation frame limit.

Is there a subscription in this build?

No. The licence is applied outright, so nothing renews and no account is needed.

Do I need a drawing tablet?

Effectively yes. The program is built around pressure and tilt, and a mouse gives up most of what makes it good.

Can it open files from other painting programs?

Yes, layered files from the common formats import with layers intact, though program specific effects are flattened.

EX in the title bar, no renewal. Vector layer erasing to intersections is the reason I moved over.

Managed a 240 page book as one project and batch exported the lot. Took minutes.

No frame limit on the timeline. Finished a two minute animation entirely inside it.
