Overview

Capture One is the raw processor people move to when they care about colour more than about convenience. The demosaic and the per camera profiling produce a file that starts closer to right than the alternatives, and the colour editor lets you isolate and move a specific range of hue, saturation and lightness with a precision that no general purpose editor offers. For skin tones and for product work where a colour has to match a physical sample, this is the reason it exists.

This build carries both the Pro and Enterprise configurations with licensing applied, so tethered capture, the full layer system, the styles engine and the session workflow all run without a subscription or an activation step. The camera profile library is installed with the program rather than downloaded, which matters on a shoot where the connection is a phone hotspot.

Colour and the processing engine

Each supported camera gets its own profile rather than a generic curve, which is why files land looking sensible before you touch anything. Highlight recovery holds detail further than most processors manage, and the shadow recovery does it without the plastic flattening that gives away a heavily lifted file.

The colour editor works in three modes. Basic moves broad ranges, advanced isolates a specific picked colour with an adjustable smoothness so a single object can be shifted without dragging everything near it along, and skin tone mode evens out hue and saturation variation across a face while leaving the underlying tone alone. That third one is why portrait and fashion work lives here.

Layers, masks and local work

Adjustments are layered, and almost every tool in the program can be applied to a layer rather than the whole image. Masks are drawn, gradient based, or generated by luminosity range or colour range, and they can be refined afterwards. Because the layers are non destructive and stored with the file, a session can be revisited months later and taken apart.

Healing and cloning happen on layers too, so a retouch does not commit. Styles and presets apply as layers with an opacity control, which means a bought or built look can be dialled back rather than applied at full strength. The whole layer stack copies between images, including the masks where the framing allows.

Tethering, sessions and output

Tethered capture is the feature that keeps studios on this program. Images land on the machine as they are shot, with a live preview, camera control from the laptop, and adjustments applied on arrival so the client sees a graded frame rather than a flat raw. Capture pilot lets a second screen or a tablet on the network show the incoming frames to whoever needs to see them.

Sessions organise a job as a folder structure rather than a database, which suits shoot based work far better than a catalogue. Catalogues are available for anyone who prefers them. Export runs recipes, multiple output configurations processed in one pass, so the same selection goes out as full resolution files, web sized versions and a contact sheet without three separate operations.

What you get

  • Per camera colour profiling rather than a generic conversion
  • Three mode colour editor including a dedicated skin tone mode
  • Layered adjustments with drawn, gradient, luminosity and colour range masks
  • Non destructive healing and cloning on layers
  • Styles and presets applied as adjustable layers
  • Tethered capture with camera control and adjustments on arrival
  • Capture pilot for showing incoming frames on another device
  • Session and catalogue workflows both available
  • Export recipes producing multiple outputs in a single pass

Inside the archive

  • Capture One 16 application, offline installer
  • Pro and Enterprise configurations
  • Full camera profile and lens correction library
  • Default style and preset packs

Installing it

  1. Turn off real time protection before running setup.
  2. Run the installer as administrator and let the profile library unpack fully.
  3. Apply the licensing step from the archive before the first launch.
  4. Open the program and create a session to confirm it starts without an activation dialog.
  5. Connect a camera and check that tethering picks it up before relying on it for a job.

Questions about this release

Does tethering work with my camera?

The supported body list is broad and included with the profile library. Connect and test before a paid job rather than on the day.

Sessions or catalogues?

Sessions for shoot based work where each job is a folder. Catalogues if you want one library across everything. Both are here.

Will it read my existing raw files?

Yes, and it applies its own profile rather than reading adjustments made in another processor. The raw file itself is never modified.

Is there an activation step?

No. Licensing is applied during install, so it opens straight into the workspace.

Tethered a full day shoot, no dropouts, no activation prompt. Client watched on a tablet through capture pilot.

Skin tone mode in the colour editor is the whole reason I switched. Nothing else does it this cleanly.

Export recipes cut my delivery time in half. Full res, web and contact sheet in one go.
