Overview

Vegas has always worked differently from every other editor, and the people who like it like it for exactly that reason. Tracks hold anything, there is no bin structure forcing your media into a shape before you can cut, and events are trimmed and crossfaded by dragging them over each other rather than through a dedicated tool mode. On a fast turnaround job that difference adds up to real time saved.

Since Boris FX took the product over, the plug-in side has stopped being an upsell and started being the point. This build carries the bundled effect set installed rather than offered, along with the full editing environment, the disc authoring tools and the audio path that Vegas inherited from its history as a multitrack audio program. It is pre-activated, so there is no watermark, no trial timer and no account prompt.

The way Vegas edits

Every track is a general purpose track. Drop a video file, an image sequence and a music bed on the same timeline and Vegas handles all three without a conform step. Trimming happens on the event edges directly, overlapping two events creates a crossfade automatically, and the transition can be swapped afterwards from the properties without rebuilding the edit.

Nested timelines, track motion with proper 3D positioning, and per event pan and crop mean a lot of finishing work happens on the timeline rather than in a separate compositor. The result is that simple motion graphics and picture in picture layouts never leave the edit, which is where Vegas is genuinely faster than the alternatives.

Colour, effects and the Boris set

Colour grading runs through a node based panel with scopes docked next to it, covering primaries, curves, secondary keys and LUT application. Log footage is handled with input transforms so a flat camera file lands in a workable state rather than needing a manual stretch.

The bundled Boris effect set is a serious addition rather than a token one. Titling with proper typographic control, keying that survives an imperfect green screen, image restoration for noise and flicker, and a large transition library all install with the program. Planar tracking is available inside the effect chain, which means a sign replacement or a screen insert can be done without an external tool.

Audio and delivery

The audio side is deeper than the competition because of where Vegas started. Per track effect chains, bus routing, envelope automation on every parameter and a proper mixer window are all there, which means a dialogue mix does not need to leave the program for a separate DAW pass on most jobs.

Export uses hardware acceleration where the machine offers it, with presets covering the common delivery formats and platforms. Rendering can be queued and the disc authoring component is included for anyone still delivering on physical media, which is a smaller group every year but not an empty one.

Questions about this release

Is the Boris effect set included?

Yes, it installs with the program rather than being offered as a separate purchase.

Does the export carry a watermark?

No. The build is pre-activated so renders come out clean at every resolution and format.

Do I need to transcode my footage first?

Usually not. Vegas cuts most camera formats natively, though very long GOP 4K benefits from proxies on a modest machine.

Can I open older Vegas projects?

Yes. Projects from earlier versions open and convert on load.

Effect set is all there in the list. Rendered a two hour timeline clean, no stamp.

Still the fastest thing I have used for a quick turnaround. No conform step is worth an hour a day.

Colour panel with scopes docked is much better than it used to be. Log footage lands usable now.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
