Overview
Inventor is a parametric mechanical modeller, which means a part is a history of operations driven by dimensions rather than a fixed lump of geometry. Change a dimension and everything downstream of it rebuilds, including the assembly it sits in and the drawing that documents it. For a product that will go through twenty revisions before it is made, that is the entire value proposition.
This is the Professional edition, which adds the simulation, tolerance analysis, routed systems and mould design capability on top of the standard modelling set. The licensing is applied in the build, so there is no license manager to install, no sign-in and no thirty day counter. The content centre of standard parts is included and installed locally.
Parts, assemblies and constraints
Parts are built from sketches with dimensional and geometric constraints, extruded, revolved, swept and lofted into solids, then refined with fillets, chamfers, patterns and shells. A fully constrained sketch is one that cannot be dragged into a different shape by accident, and getting into the habit of constraining fully is what separates a model that survives a revision from one that has to be rebuilt.
Assemblies place parts against each other with joints rather than with abstract mates, which makes a mechanism behave the way the real thing will: a hinge rotates, a slider slides, and the assembly can be driven through its range to check for interference. Large assemblies are handled with level of detail and simplified representations so a machine with a few thousand components still opens.
Sheet metal, frames and specialised design
The sheet metal environment works in the language of the process: faces, flanges, bends, punches and corner reliefs, with a flat pattern generated automatically and correctly accounting for bend allowance from the material rules you set. That flat pattern is what goes to the machine, and getting it right without the environment is a great deal of manual work.
Frame generation builds a structural frame from a skeleton of lines with standard sections from the content centre, applying end treatments where members meet. The Professional edition adds routed systems for pipes, tubes and cable harnesses, plus the tooling design capability for moulded parts.
Simulation, drawings and exchange
Stress analysis and frame analysis run inside the modelling environment against the real part rather than a simplified one, with material properties from the library. Dynamic simulation drives an assembly through its motion and reports the loads, which then feeds the stress analysis. Tolerance analysis stacks up the dimensional variation across an assembly to see whether it will actually go together.
Drawings are generated from the model with views, sections, details, dimensions, annotation and a parts list that counts the assembly automatically. Exchange with other systems is handled through the neutral solid formats in both directions, and the common mechanical formats can be opened directly and modelled on.

Installing it
- Unpack to a local drive with at least 120 GB free during install.
- Suspend real time protection for the whole install, which is long.
- Run setup as administrator and choose a local content centre rather than a server one.
- Do not run the license configuration tool afterwards. Licensing is applied in the build.
- Open Inventor once, set your project file and units, then let the content centre finish indexing.

Questions about this release
Is this the Professional edition?
Yes. Simulation, tolerance analysis, routed systems and tooling design are all present, not just the standard modelling set.
Do I need a license server?
No. Licensing is applied in the build, so the license manager should not be installed or configured at all.
Is the content centre local or hosted?
Local. Choose the local option during install and it indexes on first launch, after which it works offline.
Can it open files from other mechanical systems?
Yes, the neutral solid formats in both directions and the common mechanical formats directly.

Flat pattern bend allowance bug was biting me constantly before. Fixed here, checked against a real part.
Content centre installed locally and indexed in about twenty minutes. Works with the network off after that.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
