Overview

Civil 3D's premise is that a civil design is a model, not a set of drawings, and that the drawings should be views onto the model rather than the design itself. A surface, an alignment, a profile and a corridor are objects with relationships, so moving the alignment recalculates the profile, rebuilds the corridor, updates the cross sections, revises the earthwork volumes and refreshes every label that reported any of it.

On a project of any size that is transformative, because the alternative is recalculating and redrawing all of it by hand every time the geometry moves, which it always does. The learning curve is real and the payoff is proportional. This build carries the full toolset with the country specific content packs and the licensing already applied.

Surfaces, alignments and profiles

Surfaces are built from survey points, contours, breaklines, boundaries or imported point cloud data, and they update as their source data changes. Two surfaces compare to give a volume difference, which is the basis of every earthwork calculation on a project. Point clouds from a laser scan or a drone survey import directly and can be used as a surface source, which is now how a large share of existing ground gets captured.

Alignments define horizontal geometry with proper design constraints: curve radii checked against design speed, spiral transitions, and a criteria file holding the standard being designed to so a violation is flagged rather than discovered at review. Profiles handle the vertical, with the existing ground extracted from the surface automatically and the design profile drawn against it with vertical curve criteria applied.

Everything is labelled by style rather than by hand, so the annotation reports the current value of what it is attached to. When the geometry changes the labels change, which removes an entire category of drawing errors that used to survive to construction.

Corridors, sections and quantities

A corridor applies an assembly, which is a cross sectional template made of subassemblies for lanes, shoulders, kerbs, ditches and side slopes, along an alignment and profile. The result is a three dimensional model of the constructed surface, and it rebuilds whenever the geometry underneath changes. Different assemblies apply over different stations, which handles a road that changes character along its length.

Sample lines cut cross sections at intervals, producing section views for the drawing set and the material volumes for the quantity take off. Because the corridor is a model rather than a drawing, those quantities are computed from geometry rather than estimated, and they update with everything else.

Pipe networks for drainage and utilities are modelled with parts from a catalogue, with rules for cover depth, slope and structure connection. Interference checking finds where a proposed pipe run collides with an existing service or another network, which is a considerably cheaper discovery in the model than in the ground.

Survey, grading and deliverables

The survey side imports field data in the common formats, handles figure and description key coding so survey points become linework automatically, and supports traverse adjustment. Grading objects create designed surfaces from feature lines with slope and elevation criteria, which covers site pads, car parks and anywhere the design is a shaped surface rather than a linear corridor.

Plan and profile sheet production generates the drawing set from the model along an alignment, with view frames, match lines and sheet numbering handled automatically. On a long linear project that saves an enormous amount of work and, more importantly, keeps every sheet consistent with the model when the design changes late.

Machine control output produces the surface models that guide automated construction equipment, which is now the normal delivery for earthworks on a project of any scale.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit
Processor3 GHz or faster, high single core speed matters most
Memory32 GB recommended, 16 GB is a working minimum
Graphics4 GB VRAM with DirectX 12 support, 8 GB for point cloud work
Storage40 GB free on an SSD
Display1920 by 1080 minimum, higher strongly preferred

Installing it

  1. Unpack the archive to a local drive with at least 60 GB free.
  2. Suspend real time protection until the install and licensing step are both finished.
  3. Run the setup executable as administrator and select the country content packs you need.
  4. Let the installer finish and restart the machine when it asks.
  5. Open the program, skip the sign in prompt, and open an example project.
  6. Rebuild a corridor in the example to confirm the full toolset is available.

Questions about this release

Is it just AutoCAD with extra tools?

It runs on the same platform, but the civil objects are a genuine model with relationships. The drawings are views onto it rather than the design itself.

Can it handle drone or scan point clouds?

Yes, they import directly and can be used as a surface source. Point cloud work is where the video memory requirement comes from.

Do the drawings open in plain AutoCAD?

They open, but the civil objects appear as proxies without the toolset. An object enabler is needed for a viewer to display them correctly.

Does it need a sign in?

No. The licensing is applied in this build, so the prompt at first launch can be skipped.

Why is my corridor rebuild so slow?

Usually a long alignment with a very tight sampling frequency. Increase the interval for working and tighten it only for final output.

Comments

alignment_bo2 days ago

Corridor rebuild on a nine kilometre alignment went from a coffee break to about a minute. Enormous difference day to day.

survey_rk1 week ago

Volume reporting off a big drone point cloud was giving nonsense before. Correct in this build, checked against hand calcs.

drainage_ime3 weeks ago

Interference checking across networks found two clashes with an existing service. Would have been found by a digger otherwise.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
