Overview

Cinema 4D's reputation is built on being the 3D package that does not fight you. The interface is consistent, the parametric objects behave the way you expect after ten minutes rather than ten weeks, and a scene that worked yesterday still works today. In a discipline where the alternatives are notoriously deep and notoriously fragile, being reliable is a feature, and it is why so much broadcast and motion graphics work runs through this program specifically.

The Studio tier is the complete one: modelling, character rigging, dynamics and simulation, the MoGraph toolset, volume modelling, and the node based rendering that ties it together. This build includes the Redshift renderer alongside the standard and physical engines, with the licensing already applied so nothing has to be attached to an account before a render will start.

Modelling and the MoGraph toolset

Polygon modelling, subdivision surfaces, splines and the generator objects cover the usual ground, and the parametric approach means a change to a source spline propagates through everything built on it. Volume modelling adds a boolean workflow that does not care about topology, which is the fastest way to build a complex hard surface shape without spending the afternoon fixing geometry.

MoGraph is the reason a great deal of broadcast work uses this program. Cloners, effectors, fields and the fracture object make animating hundreds or thousands of objects a matter of describing the behaviour rather than keyframing the instances. Fields in particular changed the workflow, since an effect's influence can be shaped by a falloff object, a shader, a sound file or another field entirely, layered like a compositing stack.

Scene nodes and the capsule system let a reusable behaviour be built once and dropped into any project as an object with its own controls. For a studio with a house style that is a considerable saving, since the setup work stops being repeated per job.

Simulation, rigging and animation

The unified simulation system covers rigid bodies, soft bodies, cloth, rope and particles in one solver, which means they interact properly rather than being separate systems bolted together. Pyro handles fire and smoke natively with a viewport preview that is close enough to the render to judge timing from.

Character tools include a full rigging system with inverse kinematics, weight painting, pose morphing and a motion capture retargeting path. The animation side is standard but well executed: a proper graph editor, motion clips for reusing takes, and the timeline behaviour that lets a long sequence be organised rather than endured.

Rendering with Redshift

Redshift is a biased graphics card renderer, which in practice means it produces a clean image in a fraction of the time an unbiased engine takes and gives you the controls to decide where that time is spent. For motion graphics, where a hundred frames of a spinning logo need to be finished tonight, that trade is the correct one nearly every time.

The node based material system is shared, so a shader built for one engine translates rather than being rebuilt. Multi pass output writes the render into separate layers for compositing, and the standard exchange formats carry a scene out to a compositor with cameras and mattes intact. Render queue and command line rendering are both available for running a batch overnight.

Installing it

  1. Unpack the archive to a local drive with plenty of free space.
  2. Suspend real time protection until the install and licensing step are finished.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and include the content library when prompted.
  4. Install the Redshift component when the installer offers it, it is part of this release.
  5. Launch once, skip the account prompt, and render a frame from an example scene to confirm the engine list is complete.

Is Redshift really included?

Yes, it installs with this release and appears in the render engine list. It needs a card with enough video memory to be worth using.

Which tier of features is this?

Studio, the complete one. Modelling, simulation, character tools and MoGraph are all present.

Does it work with a compositor?

Yes, multi pass output writes separate layers and the standard exchange formats carry cameras and mattes out cleanly.

How much video memory do I need?

8 GB is the practical floor for Redshift on real scenes. Below that it will fall back and get very slow on anything complex.

Can I render from the command line?

Yes, command line rendering is available and is the sensible way to run an overnight batch.

Cloth against a fast collider finally behaves. Was having to cache at silly step counts before.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
