Overview

Elements is the answer to a real problem: most people who want to fix a photograph do not want to learn what a layer mask is. The program is built around three modes, and the middle one is the reason it exists. Quick mode gives sliders and one click fixes. Guided mode walks you through a specific result, replace the sky, remove an object, make an old photo look new, one step at a time with the panel telling you what to click. Expert mode is a proper editor with layers, masks and selections for when you want to do it yourself.

This build is the full offline installer with the licensing handled, so there is no thirty day counter and no sign in on launch. Both the Editor and the Organizer are included, along with the guided edit set and the effect libraries, and the machine learning features run against the bundled models rather than fetching anything on first use.

The guided edits

There are around sixty guided edits and they cover the things people actually want. Replacing a flat sky with a better one and matching the colour of the foreground to it. Removing a person or an object from a background. Turning a colour photo into a convincing black and white. Restoring an old scan with tears and fading. Making a double exposure, a watercolour effect, or a shot where everything is grey except one subject.

Each one is a sequence of clearly labelled steps with the panel explaining what each does. Crucially, the result lands as a normal document in the editor, so you can switch to Expert mode afterwards and adjust what the guided edit built rather than being stuck with what it gave you.

The automatic features

Subject selection, background removal, skin smoothing, object removal and the sky replacement all run on trained models included with this build. There is also a set of moving photo effects that animate a still image with a slow camera move and export as a short video for sharing, which is the kind of feature that sounds trivial and gets used constantly.

Colourise takes a black and white photo and adds plausible colour, which on a portrait or a street scene is startling and on anything with unusual colours is a guess. Photo restoration handles scratches, dust and fading on scanned prints in one pass with a manual clean up afterwards.

The Organizer

The Organizer is a cataloguing application, and it is the part people underuse. It scans a folder tree, groups photos by date taken and by event, recognises faces and lets you tag people once so they are found in every other photo, and identifies locations from the position data the camera recorded.

Smart tags analyse image content so a search for a dog or a beach finds photos you never labelled. Albums, keyword tags and ratings work the way they do everywhere else. Crucially, the Organizer does not move your files unless you tell it to, so an existing folder structure survives being catalogued.

Expert mode and output

Expert mode has layers, layer masks, adjustment layers, blend modes, the selection tools, the healing and clone tools, the filter gallery and a scripting free but capable actions system. It is not Photoshop, and the things it is missing are the professional print production tools and the deepest parts of the compositing pipeline, neither of which the intended user needs.

Output covers prints with a layout designer for contact sheets and picture packages, photo books, slideshows with music, and the usual file formats. Raw files from most camera bodies open through the same develop dialogue Photoshop uses, which is a better raw converter than the price of this program implies.

Questions about this release

How is this different from Photoshop?

It covers photo editing with a gentler interface and adds a cataloguing application. It leaves out the professional print production and the deepest compositing tools.

Do the automatic features need an internet connection?

No. The models are bundled in this build rather than downloaded on first use.

Will the Organizer move my photos?

Not unless you tell it to. It catalogues the folders in place and leaves your structure alone.

Can I edit a guided result afterwards?

Yes. It produces a normal layered document, so switch to Expert mode and adjust anything it built.

Restored a box of scanned prints from the seventies. The guided restoration pass did most of it.

Guided sky replacement is genuinely idiot proof and the result does not look pasted on.

Catalogued 60000 photos without moving a single file. Face tagging found people across twenty years.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
