Overview

ACDSee has been the fast photo browser for a very long time, and speed is still its defining quality. Point it at a folder of two thousand raw files and thumbnails appear immediately, with no import step, no catalogue to build and no waiting. If you want the database features you can index a folder and get keyword search, face recognition and everything else, but you are never required to, which is the opposite of how most photo software works.

Ultimate is the largest edition and joins three things together: the Manage mode browser and cataloguer, the Develop mode raw processor with non destructive edits, and the Edit mode layered pixel editor with masks, blend modes and effects. This build is posted with the licensing handled, so there is no trial period, no watermark and no sign in, and the full effect and preset libraries are included.

Manage mode

Browsing is direct against the file system, so what you see is what is on the disk. Renaming, moving, copying and deleting happen for real rather than in a catalogue's idea of your library, which means the folder structure you already have stays meaningful and nothing gets lost inside a database.

Indexing adds the database layer on top for the folders you choose: keyword and hierarchical tags, colour labels, ratings, categories, face recognition, location data and a search that combines all of it. Batch operations rename by pattern, apply metadata, convert formats, resize and adjust in bulk, and the process runs in the background while you keep browsing.

Develop mode

Raw development covers exposure, tone curve, white balance, clarity, dehaze, noise reduction, lens correction with profiles, chromatic aberration removal and perspective correction. Everything is non destructive and stored alongside the file, so the original raw is never touched and a develop recipe can be copied to a hundred other frames in one action.

Colour work goes deeper than most: separate colour and tone wheels, a light equaliser that adjusts brightness in bands rather than by a single curve, and a colour equaliser for hue, saturation and brightness per colour range. Gradients, radial filters and a brush apply any of it selectively.

Edit mode

This is a real pixel editor with layers, layer masks, adjustment layers, blend modes, selections including a colour range selection, healing and cloning, liquify, text and a large effect set. It handles the jobs that a raw developer cannot: compositing two frames, removing something complicated, or building a graphic around a photograph.

Because the three modes live in one application, a file goes from browsing to development to pixel editing without exporting between stages, and comes back to the browser afterwards. For a photographer producing a lot of images that removes most of the file shuffling from the day.

Extras worth knowing about

Batch develop applies a recipe across a shoot, which for an event photographer is the whole workflow. The compare view puts up to four images side by side at matched zoom for choosing a keeper. Duplicate finder works across indexed folders. A slideshow and print layout tool covers the output side, and the media mode handles video files in the same browser rather than pretending they do not exist.

Everything is local. There is no cloud component, no account, and no sync, which for a lot of people is the reason they chose it over the subscription alternatives in the first place.

Questions about this release

Do I have to import my photos?

No, and that is the main reason people use it. Browsing works directly against folders. Indexing is optional and per folder.

Is there a cloud or account requirement?

None at all. Everything is local, and this build has the licensing handled so there is no sign in either.

Can it replace both a developer and an editor?

For most photographic work, yes. Develop mode covers raw processing and Edit mode covers layered pixel work.

Will renaming in the browser break anything?

No. File operations are real, so the disk and the program always agree about where things are.

Two thousand raws in a folder, thumbnails up instantly, no import. That is all I ever wanted.

Batch develop across a whole shoot then straight into layers for the album pages. One program, no exporting.

No account, no sync, no banner. Light equaliser is better than the curve I was fighting with before.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
