Overview
Lightroom Classic is the version that keeps your photographs on your own disks and treats the catalogue as the centre of the workflow rather than an afterthought. Import a card, cull it, develop what survives, and export in whatever sizes are needed, with every edit stored as instructions against the original file so the raw is never touched. For anyone shooting volume, the library side is as important as the develop side, and Classic is the only one of the two applications that takes it seriously.
This is the desktop build with licensing already handled. It runs entirely locally: no cloud sync requirement, no storage quota, no sign-in before the develop module unlocks. Catalogues live where you put them and can sit on an external drive without complaint.
The library side
Import can copy, move or add in place, apply a develop preset and metadata on the way in, and build previews at the size you actually need. Getting the preview setting right is the single biggest factor in how fast the catalogue feels afterwards.
Collections, smart collections, keywords, colour labels, flags and star ratings all combine into filters, so a set of two hundred thousand images stays navigable. Smart collections update themselves as the criteria are met, which is how a delivery set or a reject pile maintains itself without manual sorting.
Developing an image
The raw engine handles current sensors with proper lens and camera profiles, and the tone controls work in a linear order that makes a correction predictable: exposure, contrast, the highlight and shadow recovery pair, then the tone curve for shape. Masking is the part that changed the program most in recent cycles, with subject, sky, background and object detection producing masks that can then be combined and subtracted from one another.
Denoise and enhance run on the graphics card and produce a new file next to the original rather than replacing it. On a modern card a full resolution raw takes seconds. On an older one it takes minutes, which is worth knowing before you queue a hundred of them.
Export and round trips
Export presets cover size, sharpening for the output medium, colour space, metadata handling and watermarking, and several can be run at once so a single image goes out as a full size file and a web version in one operation.
Round tripping to Photoshop keeps the edit stack and returns the result into the catalogue stacked next to the original. Plug-ins install into the export and post processing chain normally in this build.

Questions about this release
Does it need cloud storage?
No. Classic keeps everything local. There is no quota and no sync requirement in this build.
Can it open my existing catalogue?
Yes, it will offer to upgrade it. Back the old one up first, since the upgrade is one directional.
Why is denoise so slow?
It runs on the graphics card. On a card with under 4 GB of memory it falls back to a much slower path.
Does the round trip to Photoshop work?
Yes, with a Photoshop install present. The returned file lands stacked next to the original.
Comments
No sign-in wall, develop module opens straight away. That was the whole worry.
Denoise on a 3060 takes about six seconds a file. Very usable.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
Imported a 60k catalogue from my old install with no trouble. Masking is a huge step up from what I had.
