Overview
Windows 7 Professional is still installed deliberately rather than accidentally. It runs on hardware that current versions will refuse, it drives machinery and instruments whose vendor software was never rebuilt, and it boots into a desktop that does not change under you. Workshops, studios with older capture cards, test benches and anything with a parallel port attached tend to stay here on purpose, and this image exists for exactly those machines.
The image is built from the Service Pack 1 release media with the servicing stack and the final cumulative rollups already folded in, which removes the long update chain that a clean install from original media otherwise demands. The Professional edition is the one included, so domain join, remote desktop hosting, the encrypted file system and the XP compatibility mode are all present. Licensing is settled in the image, so the desktop comes up activated with no prompt.
Why this edition
Professional is the practical middle of the Windows 7 range. It carries everything Home Premium has and adds the pieces that matter on a machine doing real work: joining a domain, hosting a remote desktop session rather than only connecting out, encrypting files at the filesystem level, backing up to a network location, and running the XP compatibility environment for software that predates the whole line.
The Ultimate edition adds only full disk encryption and the complete language pack set beyond this, neither of which most people installing Windows 7 today are after. Professional is lighter, and on the sort of hardware this image usually lands on, lighter is the point.
Installing on modern hardware
The main obstacle on anything built in the last several years is that the original installer has no driver for current USB controllers, which means the keyboard and mouse go dead the moment the setup environment loads. This image has the relevant controller drivers injected into both the boot environment and the install image, which handles the majority of cases without any preparation on your part.
Storage is the second obstacle. If the machine is set to the newer storage controller mode in firmware, load the vendor driver at the disk selection screen or switch the mode to the compatible setting before installing. The readme lists which firmware settings need attention, including disabling secure boot, since the image boots in the legacy mode.
What has been changed and what has not
The component set is untouched. Nothing has been stripped to shrink the image, no theme has been replaced, no third party utility has been added to the desktop, and the default services are exactly as the original media configures them. The only modifications are the folded in updates, the injected controller drivers and the licensing state.
The telemetry components that were backported into this line late in its life are left out of the update selection, so a fresh install here does not carry them. If you want them for any reason they can be installed afterwards from the normal update path, which remains functional for the rollups that are still served.

Installing it
- Write the image to a USB drive using a tool that supports the legacy boot layout. A plain file copy will not produce a bootable drive.
- In firmware, disable secure boot and enable legacy or compatibility boot support.
- Set the storage controller to the compatible mode if you do not have a vendor driver ready to load.
- Boot from the drive, pick your language and edition, and install to the target disk as normal.
- At the desktop, install the chipset and graphics drivers for the machine. The licensing state is already applied and needs nothing from you.

Questions about this release
Will it install on a machine from this year?
Usually, provided the firmware still offers a legacy boot path. The USB driver problem that normally blocks it has been handled in this image.
Does it still receive updates?
The general update channel for this line closed, but the rollups that remain served will install. The image is already at the final level regardless.
Is anything removed to make it smaller?
No. The component set is exactly what the original media installs. Only updates, drivers and the licensing state have been changed.
Can I install it next to another Windows?
Yes, on a separate partition. Install this one second or repair the boot entries afterwards, since it writes the older boot loader.
