Overview

Waves has been the default plug-in library in project studios for two decades, and the Ultimate bundle is every plug-in they make gathered into one installation. That is several hundred processors: the modelled hardware compressors and equalisers, the reverbs, the delays, the pitch and vocal tools, the restoration set, the mastering limiters, the guitar amp modelling, and the specialised things you use twice a year and are very glad to have when you do.

This build installs the plug-ins in the VST3 and AAX formats along with the standalone shell, and registers them where every major host will find them. The licence layer is handled locally, so there is no central manager application running in the background, no online activation step and no licence that has to be moved to a drive before the session can open. Plug-ins load in a host with no dialog and no trial banner across the interface.

Dynamics, equalisation and channel strips

The dynamics section is where most of the daily work happens. The modelled bus compressors, the optical and FET style channel compressors, the multiband processors and the transient shapers are all here, and they are the versions that get named in mixing tutorials for a reason. Equalisation runs from clean surgical filters with an analyser through to the modelled console strips that colour as they cut.

The channel strips deserve their own mention because they change how a session is built. Loading one strip that does gate, compression, equalisation and saturation in a single window with one modelled character is faster than assembling four plug-ins, and on a forty channel session the processor saving is real. Several console models are included, each with its own preamp behaviour.

Reverbs, delays and space

The reverb collection covers the plate, hall, room and chamber algorithms, the convolution engine with a large impulse library, and the modelled classic units that people still reach for on drums and vocals. Each carries presets built by working engineers, and the presets are genuinely a starting point rather than a demonstration.

Delays run from clean digital through tape and analogue models with their own filtering and modulation. The stereo imaging and widening tools sit alongside them, including the mid and side processors that let you widen a mix without ruining its mono behaviour. There is a mono compatibility meter in the imaging tools, which is the thing people forget to check.

Vocals, restoration and mastering

Vocal processing includes pitch correction in both a graphical and a real time form, doubling and harmony generation, de-essing, and the vocal specific compressors and riders that handle level automation before it reaches a fader. The automatic vocal rider is the one that saves the most time on a long session.

Restoration covers broadband noise, hum, clicks, crackle and clipping repair, all with a listen mode so you can hear what is being removed rather than guessing. The mastering chain has the linear phase equalisers, the multiband dynamics, the loudness metering to the broadcast standards and the limiters, including the ones that most streaming masters go through.

ProcessorIntel or AMD quad core, 2.8 GHz or faster
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for large sessions
GraphicsAny card, the interfaces are lightly accelerated

Installing it

  1. Unpack to a local drive with at least 25 GB free.
  2. Turn off real time protection for the duration of the install.
  3. Run setup as administrator and set the VST3 folder to the one your host already scans.
  4. Do not install the vendor's central manager if it is offered as an optional component.
  5. Open your host, rescan plug-ins, and load one. No activation dialog should appear.

Questions about this release

Which plug-in formats are installed?

VST3 and AAX, plus a standalone shell. The older VST2 format is not included in this build.

Is a licence manager needed?

No. The licence layer is local in this build, so there is nothing running between sessions and no drive to move a licence onto.

Will old sessions recall correctly?

Sessions that used earlier versions of the same plug-ins recall their settings. Sessions using the VST2 versions will need the plug-ins reinserted.

Why does my host take so long to start?

Scanning several hundred plug-ins takes time on the first run only. Most hosts cache the result and start normally afterwards.

Loaded the whole set, first scan took ten minutes, after that instant. No manager running in the tray.

Channel strips alone are worth the download. Session opened with everything recalled.

Scaling fix means the older interfaces are finally readable on a 4K screen.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
