Overview
VueScan exists because scanner manufacturers abandon drivers long before the hardware stops working. A flatbed that was perfectly good a decade ago is often stranded by a driver that was never updated for a current operating system, and VueScan talks to it directly instead. The supported device list runs into the thousands and covers flatbeds, sheet feeders, film scanners and multifunction devices from every maker that ever sold volume.
The Pro edition adds the parts that matter for archival work: raw scan files that keep everything the sensor captured, IT8 colour calibration against a reference target, and the infrared cleaning pass on scanners that have the hardware for it. This build is posted with the license applied, so scans save without the watermark grid that the unregistered version prints across the output.
Getting an old scanner working again
In most cases the process is nothing more than plugging the device in and launching the program. VueScan carries its own drivers, so it does not care whether the manufacturer's software installs on your operating system version or not, and it will usually find a device that Windows itself lists as unknown. Where a scanner needs firmware uploaded at connection time, that firmware is included for the models that require it.
For network attached multifunction devices the program can scan over the network as well as over USB, which is often the only way to reach the scanner half of an office printer once the vendor suite stops installing. Sheet feeders get duplex handling, blank page removal and batch numbering, so a stack of paper becomes a set of numbered files without touching the computer between sheets.
Film, negatives and slides
This is the reason a lot of people buy the Pro edition. VueScan carries a large library of film base profiles by stock, so a colour negative inverts to something close to correct rather than to the orange mess that a generic invert produces. Slides and black and white film have their own paths, and multi exposure scanning combines two passes at different exposures to pull detail out of dense shadow areas on a slide.
Infrared cleaning uses the scanner's fourth channel where the hardware provides one, detecting dust and scratches physically rather than guessing from the image. It works on colour film and slides, not on traditional silver black and white, which is a limitation of the process rather than the software. Grain reduction and restoration of faded stock are separate passes you can dial in.
Raw output and colour
Pro writes a raw scan file that holds the unprocessed sensor data. That means you can rescan from the file later with different settings instead of putting the original back on the glass, which matters when the original is a fragile print or a negative you would rather handle once. Raw files can be batched through a new set of adjustments in one pass.
IT8 calibration takes a scan of a reference target and builds a profile for the specific device, which is the only way to get colour that is actually accurate rather than merely pleasant. The profile is written as a standard ICC file and can be used elsewhere. Output covers TIFF at 8 and 16 bit, JPEG, PDF with multi page assembly, and text through the bundled OCR.

Installing it
- Unpack the archive and run setup as administrator.
- Turn off real time protection first, the license module is patched.
- Leave the manufacturer's own driver installed or not, it makes no difference. VueScan uses its own.
- Connect the scanner and launch the program. It scans for devices at startup.
- If nothing is found, switch the input source to network and check the device is awake.

Questions about this release
Will it work with my scanner?
If the scanner was sold in any volume, almost certainly. The bundled driver set is the broadest of any scanning software, including devices whose makers dropped support long ago.
Do I still need the manufacturer software?
No. VueScan does not use it and will find the device on its own.
Does infrared cleaning work on black and white film?
Not on traditional silver based film, because the silver blocks infrared the same way dust does. It works on colour negatives, slides and chromogenic black and white.
What does Pro add over the standard edition?
Raw scan output, IT8 calibration and infrared cleaning. This build is the Pro edition with all three active.
Comments
Film profiles make a huge difference on old negatives. Multi exposure pulls real shadow detail.
No watermark grid on saved scans, which is the whole point. Raw files rescan fine.
