Overview
Smadav is deliberately not a replacement for a main antivirus, and it says so itself. It is a small second layer that installs alongside whatever you already run, using so little memory that the two never fight, and it concentrates on the category most general scanners handle indifferently: the infections that spread through USB drives, shortcut files and autorun entries passed hand to hand between machines that are not always online.
The Pro tier here has the automatic update path, the exception list, the administrator lock and the interface theming all enabled, and the periodic donation prompt removed. It is under ten megabytes, it adds a second or two to boot, and it does not take over file associations or install a browser component.
The removable drive problem
The class of infection this targets works by hiding the real contents of a drive and replacing them with shortcuts that launch the payload and then open the folder, so nothing looks wrong. Smadav watches for a drive being attached, scans it immediately, and restores hidden files and folders that have been marked as system to conceal them. That restore step is the feature people actually keep it for, because a general scanner will remove the infection and leave the files invisible.
It also cleans the autorun entries, the registry hooks and the scheduled tasks these infections leave behind, and it can immunise a drive so the same trick does not work on it again. On a machine that takes drives from many other people, a print shop or a classroom, this is the difference between a weekly problem and no problem.
Working next to another antivirus
The design constraint is coexistence. It does not hook the file system at the same level as a primary scanner, does not register as the system security provider, and does not try to quarantine what the other product is already handling. Memory use sits in single digit megabytes and processor use is effectively nothing when a scan is not running.
There is a manual scan for the whole machine or a chosen folder, and a set of repair tools for the damage these infections do rather than the infection itself: re enabling task manager, the registry editor, folder options and the run dialog after something has locked them, and undoing hidden file settings across a drive. Those repairs are useful even when the infection was removed by something else.
What the Pro tier adds
Automatic signature updates, which the free tier does by hand. An exception list, so a development folder full of scripts stops being scanned every time it changes. An administrator password that locks the settings and the exit option, which is what makes it usable on a shared or public machine. Theme colours, which matter to nobody but are part of the tier.
The scanning behaviour itself is the same in both tiers. Nothing about detection is held back for the paid version, which is unusual enough to be worth stating.

Installing it
- Unpack and run the installer as administrator.
- Your main antivirus may flag the installer. Allow it, since a second scanner looks like a competitor to most of them.
- Let the first scan of the system drive finish before attaching any removable media.
- Set an administrator password in settings if the machine is shared.
- No key is requested. The Pro features are already enabled.

Questions about this release
Can it replace my antivirus?
No, and it does not claim to. It is a second layer for removable drive infections and should sit next to a main scanner.
Will it conflict with what I already run?
It is built specifically not to. It does not register as the system security provider and does not hook at the same level.
My main antivirus flagged it.
That is common. Security products often flag each other as competitors. Allow it and add an exclusion for its folder.
Does the free version detect less?
No. Detection is identical. The Pro tier adds automatic updates, exceptions, the admin lock and theming.
Comments
Restored files a bigger scanner had cleaned but left hidden. That alone earned the install.
Runs next to Defender with no arguing. Barely registers in task manager.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
