Overview
Luminar Neo is aimed squarely at the gap between a raw developer and a full raster editor. A raw developer gives you global sliders and local adjustments and stops there. A raster editor gives you everything and asks you to build each effect from primitives. Neo sits in between with a set of tools that each solve one hard problem completely: replacing a flat sky and matching the light underneath it, relighting a subject that was backlit, removing power lines from a landscape, cleaning a portrait without flattening it.
It runs as a standalone application and as a plug-in inside the usual hosts, so it can be the whole workflow or one step in a longer one. The catalogue side is deliberately light, a browsing view rather than a full asset manager, which suits somebody who wants to edit a selected folder rather than commit an archive to another program's database.
The tools that do the heavy work
Sky replacement is the one that gets demonstrated and it deserves the attention, because the difficult part is not the mask. It is that a new sky with different light direction and colour temperature looks pasted on unless the scene underneath is adjusted to match. Neo relights the foreground from the replacement sky, adds atmospheric haze at the horizon and can reflect the new sky in water surfaces, which is what separates a convincing result from an obvious one.
Relight separates the image into depth planes and lets the near and far regions be brightened independently. On a backlit portrait that recovers a face without lifting the background into mush, and on a landscape it opens shadowed foreground without flattening the distance. Portrait tools cover face specific work: eye enhancement, skin retouching that keeps texture, body and face shape adjustments, and a background blur that uses the depth map rather than a flat radial gradient.
The erase and cleanup tools handle the everyday annoyances. Power lines and dust spots go with a single pass over the whole frame, and a general object removal brush fills what it takes out from surrounding context. On a busy background it will occasionally invent something odd, which is what the history panel is for.
Layers, masks and non destructive editing
Every adjustment lives on a layer with its own mask, and the masks can be painted, drawn as a gradient, generated from a luminosity range or built from the automatic subject and sky detection. That last option is the one that saves the most time, since a mask of just the sky or just the person is one click rather than five minutes of brushwork.
Nothing is baked in until export. The edit stack can be revisited, reordered or partially disabled at any point, and the whole stack copies onto another image as a preset or as a direct paste. For a set shot under one light that reduces a session to editing one frame properly and applying it to the rest with small corrections.
Files, formats and where it fits
Raw files from the current camera bodies open with their profiles applied, and the develop controls underneath the creative tools are complete enough that a separate raw pass is unnecessary for most work. Layered files, standard raster formats and high bit depth output are all supported, and export presets cover print sizes and the web sizes people actually use.
As a plug-in it appears in the filter menu of the usual host applications and returns a flattened result to the layer stack, which is the arrangement to use when Neo is doing one specific job inside a larger retouch. The standalone is the better choice when the whole edit happens here, since the layer stack stays live.

Installing it
- Unpack the archive to a local folder.
- Suspend real time protection for the length of the install.
- Run the installer as administrator and let it place the plug-in if a host is detected.
- Launch the standalone once and let the tool models finish unpacking on first run.
- Export a test image and confirm there is no watermark and no size restriction.

Questions about this release
Does sky replacement look pasted on?
Not when the relighting option is left enabled, which adjusts the foreground to match the new sky. Turning that off is what produces the obvious result.
Is it a catalogue program?
Only lightly. It browses folders rather than managing an archive. If you need a full catalogue, keep that in a dedicated program and use this for editing.
Can I use it inside my existing editor?
Yes, the plug-in installs into the standard filter path and returns a flattened result to the layer stack.
Are exports watermarked?
No. The licensing is applied here, so exports are clean at full resolution and full bit depth.
Does it open raw files?
Yes, with profiles for the current camera bodies. The develop controls underneath are complete enough that a separate raw pass is usually unnecessary.
