Overview

Installing a click to run Office suite the official way means writing a configuration file by hand, learning the product identifiers, and running a command line deployment tool that reports almost nothing while it works. This utility replaces that entire process with a window. You pick the version, the edition, the architecture, the channel and the applications you want, press install, and it downloads and assembles the suite for you while showing exactly what it is doing.

The archive contains two programs. The full version is the one described above, with every option exposed and a tab for the utility functions. Install Lite is the same engine with a stripped interface, a handful of preset configurations, and nothing else, which is the right choice when you just want a working Office on a machine and do not care about the details. Both are portable and neither installs itself.

Building the install you actually want

The main screen is a set of dropdowns. Version covers the whole range from the 2013 cycle through the current one. Edition covers the retail and volume product lines including the Professional tiers. Architecture is the usual choice between the 32-bit build for add-in compatibility and the 64-bit build for large spreadsheets. Channel decides how often the installation will receive feature changes, and the long term channels are the ones to pick on a machine you do not want moving under you.

The application list is where most of the value is. Deselect the components you have no use for and they are never downloaded, which cuts both the transfer size and the install time considerably. A Word, Excel and PowerPoint only install comes down to a fraction of the full suite. The selection is written into the configuration the deployment engine consumes, so the result is a normal supported installation, not a modified one.

The utility tab

Alongside the installer there is a set of maintenance functions that get used more often than the installer itself. It can remove an existing click to run suite completely, including the scattered leftovers that the standard uninstaller leaves behind, which is the usual fix for a machine where a new install keeps failing partway. It can also convert an installed retail suite to the volume product line without reinstalling, switch the update channel on an existing install, and settle the licensing state on either.

Every operation writes to the log pane while it runs. If something fails, the log names the step and the reason instead of showing a code, which is why this tool ends up recommended on every forum thread about a stuck Office install.

Install Lite

The Lite build exists because most people want one of about four configurations. It offers those as buttons, downloads the matching suite, installs it, and settles the licensing without asking anything else. There is no channel selector, no application checklist and no utility tab. On a machine you are setting up for someone who will not maintain it themselves, this is the version to use.

Both programs share the same download cache location, so if you have already pulled a suite with one, the other will reuse the files rather than transferring them again.

Questions about this release

Does it download the suite or is it in the archive?

It downloads. The archive is only the tool, which is why it is small. Budget several gigabytes of transfer for a full suite.

Can I install just Word and Excel?

Yes. Deselect everything else in the application list and only what you kept is downloaded and installed.

Will it fix an install that keeps failing?

Usually. Run the complete removal function from the utility tab, restart, then install fresh. That clears the leftovers the normal uninstaller misses.

What channel should I choose?

A long term channel if you want the installation to stay as it is. A current channel if you want feature changes as they are released.

The removal tool alone is worth keeping this around. Cleared a machine that had refused every Office install for a month.

Used Lite on my mother's laptop, three clicks and done. Full version for my own machine with only the apps I use.

Picked the long term channel so nothing shifts under me. Works exactly as described, log tells you everything.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
