Overview

KeyShot's whole design argument is that rendering should not require becoming a rendering specialist. Import a CAD model and it appears already lit and already rendering, refining continuously as you work. Materials come from a library and are applied by dragging them onto a part. Lighting is set by choosing an environment image and rotating it until the highlights fall where you want them. There are no light objects to place, no render settings to balance, and no waiting to see what you have done.

That simplicity hides a physically accurate renderer underneath, with measured materials, real camera controls including depth of field and focal length, and scientifically grounded lighting. This build is the Pro edition with the licensing handled, which adds animation, the KeyShotXR interactive output, scripting and the network rendering client, and includes the full material and environment libraries offline rather than as a download.

Live rendering and how it changes the work

The viewport is the render. Every change, a moved part, a swapped material, a rotated environment, restarts the refinement immediately and the image resolves in front of you. On a decent machine a usable preview appears within a second and a clean image within a minute.

The practical consequence is that you make decisions by looking rather than by predicting. Someone who is not a rendering artist can sit with a designer and try eight material combinations in ten minutes, which is the workflow that made this the standard tool for product visualisation in a lot of industrial design studios.

Materials and texturing

The library covers hundreds of measured materials: metals with correct reflectance, plastics from matte to high gloss, glass, liquids, fabrics, woods, gems and light emitting surfaces. Dragging one onto a part in the viewport applies it, and dropping onto the material rather than the part updates every instance at once.

Beyond the library, materials are built from a node graph with layered surfaces, and texture mapping supports the usual projections plus a labelling system for applying decals and artwork to a curved surface without unwrapping it. That labelling workflow is specifically why packaging and branding work happens here.

Lighting, cameras and output

Lighting comes from environment images, and the included set covers studio setups, interiors and outdoor conditions. The environment can be edited directly, adding, moving and resizing individual light panels within it, which gives the control of a studio lighting rig with the simplicity of rotating a sphere.

Cameras have real focal lengths, apertures and depth of field, with perspective control for the straight vertical lines that product photography wants. Output goes to still images at any resolution with the render passes separated for compositing, to animation, and to KeyShotXR, which is an interactive turntable a viewer can spin in a browser.

Import and pipeline

Import covers the native formats of the main CAD systems as well as the neutral ones, and it keeps the assembly structure and the part names so that materials can be assigned by component rather than by picking in the viewport. A live link keeps the KeyShot scene updated when the CAD model changes, so material and lighting work is not lost every time engineering revises a part.

Network rendering distributes frames or a still's passes across other machines, which turns an overnight animation into a lunchtime one in a studio with idle workstations. Scripting automates the repetitive case of rendering a product in twelve colourways for a catalogue.

Questions about this release

Do I need to know rendering to use it?

No, and that is the point. Drag a material, rotate an environment, look at the result. The physically accurate part happens underneath.

CPU or GPU rendering?

GPU is much faster where the scene fits in video memory. CPU handles anything and scales with core count. Both are in this build.

Will it keep my CAD structure?

Yes. Assembly hierarchy and part names come through, so materials can be assigned by component.

What does Pro add?

Animation, KeyShotXR, scripting and network rendering. All present here.
