Overview
EDIUS exists because broadcast newsrooms need a specific thing: drop any format on a timeline, cut it now, output it in twenty minutes, on a machine that is five years old. It solves that better than anything else by being ruthlessly optimised for real time playback of mixed formats without rendering. A timeline with three different camera codecs at three different frame rates and resolutions plays back immediately, and that single property is why the program has kept its users through decades of flashier competitors.
This is the professional edition with the license already applied. The full codec set is installed, including the intermediate formats and the broadcast wrappers, and the output presets cover both the delivery targets and the tape era formats that some archives still require. There is no watermark and no export restriction.
Real time mixed format editing
Most editors handle mixed formats by conforming everything to the sequence settings, which means rendering. EDIUS decodes each source natively and converts on the fly during playback, so a sequence containing interlaced standard definition, progressive high definition and a phone recording plays without a render bar appearing. Resolution and frame rate conversion happen in the playback path with proper motion handling rather than frame duplication.
Editing itself is keyboard first and dense. Three point editing, trim modes on every edit point, ripple and roll with the usual modifiers, and a layout that puts everything within one keystroke. Experienced operators cut faster in this program than in anything else, which is the entire justification for its existence, and new users find it unfriendly for exactly the same reason.
Colour, effects and titling
The colour correction set covers primary and secondary correction with vectorscope and waveform monitoring, including the broadcast legal limiter that news delivery requires. Effects are real time where the hardware allows and the effect palette shows which ones will need rendering before you apply them, which is more useful than discovering it afterwards.
The titling tool is a separate application that opens from the timeline and handles rolls, crawls, lower thirds and templated graphics with data fields, so a results sequence or a name strap can be driven from a text file. Layered graphics from a design application import with transparency intact and stay editable as layers.
Output, hardware and workflow
Export runs to file, to a connected broadcast output card, or to a batch queue that renders several outputs from one timeline simultaneously, which is the usual delivery pattern when the same story goes to broadcast, to a web player and to an archive. Proxy workflow is available but often unnecessary given the real time engine.
Project files are lightweight and reference media in place, so a project moves between machines by moving the file if the media paths are shared. There is a project consolidation function for collecting only the used media into a folder, which is how a finished story gets archived without carrying every unused rush with it.

Installing it
- Unpack the archive to a local drive.
- Disable real time protection for the length of the install.
- Run the main setup, then the codec pack installer.
- Do not launch until both have completed, since the codec registration happens at the end.
- Open the program, create a test sequence and drop two different formats on it to confirm real time playback.

Questions about this release
Why would I use this over a mainstream editor?
Speed on mixed formats and speed on modest hardware. If you cut fast turnaround material on a machine that is not new, nothing else keeps up. For colour heavy finishing work, use something else.
Does it really not render mixed formats?
For playback, correct. Effects still need rendering where the hardware cannot keep up, and the effect palette tells you in advance which ones those are.
Can I open projects from a newer version?
No. Project files open forward, not backward. Keep a version consistent across a facility.
Is a broadcast output card required?
No. It exports to file perfectly well. The card matters only if you need genuine video output for monitoring or tape.
