Overview

Resolve is four programs sharing one project: an editor, a colour grading suite, an audio workstation and a compositor, with a media page in front of them. It began as a grading system and that is still where it is unmatched, but the edit and Fairlight pages have long since become good enough that a whole production can live inside it without a single round trip.

The free version is genuinely capable, which makes it worth being clear about what Studio adds: temporal and spatial noise reduction, the neural engine features including magic mask and face refinement, lens and motion blur effects, higher than 4K output, HDR grading tools and the full set of Resolve FX. This build is Studio with the licensing handled, so all of that is present without a dongle or an activation key.

Colour, and why people come here for it

The colour page is node based rather than layer based, which means a grade is built as a graph you can reason about: a correction node, a parallel branch for a secondary, a key feeding a mask, all visible at once. Once the model clicks it is far more powerful than a stack of adjustment layers, and it is the reason finishing houses use it.

Studio adds the tools that a real grade needs on real footage. Temporal noise reduction cleans a high ISO shot without the smearing that a spatial only filter produces. Magic mask tracks a person or an object through a shot and gives you a matte to grade inside, which removes most hand rotoscoping from a grading session.

Edit, Fusion and Fairlight

The edit page covers the normal timeline work, and the cut page next to it is a stripped down variant built for speed on a fast turnaround. Fusion is a full node based compositor inside the same application, which is a genuine advantage over exporting to a separate program, though it is slower to learn than a layer based compositor.

Fairlight is a real audio workstation with track based mixing, busses, automation and a plug-in bridge. For a project that needs a proper mix rather than a levels pass, it removes the handoff entirely.

Hardware and performance

Resolve is graphics card bound more than anything else. The noise reduction and neural engine features in Studio are heavy, and on a card with under 8 GB of memory they will run but they will not run at a usable speed on high resolution footage. Memory of 32 GB is the comfortable floor for 4K work.

Optimised media and render cache are the tools for making a heavy timeline playable on modest hardware, and unlike proxies they are managed inside the project rather than as separate files you have to keep track of.

What you get

  • Node based colour grading with full HDR tooling
  • Temporal and spatial noise reduction
  • Neural engine features including magic mask and face refinement
  • Complete Resolve FX set including lens and motion blur
  • Output above 4K with no resolution cap
  • Fusion node compositor inside the same application
  • Fairlight audio workstation with busses and automation
  • Cut page for fast turnaround work
  • Optimised media and render cache managed inside the project

Inside the archive

  • Resolve Studio 21 application, offline installer
  • Fusion and Fairlight components
  • Resolve FX set in full
  • Neural engine model files

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit
ProcessorMulticore, 8 threads or more
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB for 4K, 64 GB for Fusion heavy work
Graphics8 GB VRAM minimum for the Studio features
Storage25 GB for the install, plus fast media storage
Display1920 by 1080 minimum, 2560 by 1440 recommended for the colour page

Installing it

  1. Update the graphics driver before installing. Resolve is stricter about this than most programs.
  2. Suspend real time protection for the install.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and let it install the panel and audio components.
  4. Restart when asked. This one genuinely needs it.
  5. Open the about panel and confirm it reports Studio rather than the free edition.

Questions about this release

How do I know it is Studio and not the free version?

The about panel says Studio, and the noise reduction and magic mask controls are present on the colour page rather than greyed out.

Does it need a dongle?

No. The licensing is handled in this build, so no hardware key is involved.

Will it run on a 4 GB card?

The program will start, but the Studio features will be unusably slow on anything above 1080p. Eight gigabytes is the real floor.

Can I open projects made in the free version?

Yes, and they gain access to the Studio effects once opened here.

Noise reduction on a 12800 ISO interview and it held detail I did not expect. Studio confirmed in the about box.

Driver update first, like the notes say. Skipped it the first time and it would not open a project.

Magic mask through a whole shot with one tweak. Saved hours of roto.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
