Overview

There is a long list of small maintenance jobs a Windows installation accumulates: temporary files that nothing deletes, registry entries pointing at software removed years ago, twelve programs that decided they should start with the computer, browser extensions nobody installed deliberately, duplicate files spread across three folders, and shortcuts pointing at nothing. Each has a tool somewhere. Glary Utilities puts them in one place and runs them together.

The one click maintenance pass covers the safe subset of those jobs and is what most people use. Beyond it sits a toolbox of about twenty individual utilities for the times something specific is wrong, including a file shredder, an undelete tool, a process manager, a startup manager and a proper uninstaller that removes the leftovers the program's own uninstaller left behind. This build has the Pro features unlocked with no trial period and no reminder screens.

The one click pass

Running it scans for registry problems, junk files, broken shortcuts, browser traces and startup entries, then shows what it found before doing anything. Nothing is removed until you say so, and everything removed is recorded so it can be put back. That undo record is what makes registry cleaning acceptable rather than reckless.

Realistically the disk space recovered is the least interesting part. The valuable outcomes are a shorter startup, because the startup manager shows exactly what is loading and how long each entry takes, and a working set of file associations after some program helpfully claimed all of them.

The toolbox

Disk cleanup and disk analysis show where the space actually went, by folder and by file, which is nearly always a surprise. Duplicate finder compares by content. Empty folder finder does what it says. File shredder overwrites before deleting for things that should not be recoverable, and the undelete tool covers the opposite case for a file that should not have gone.

The uninstall manager lists installed software with the size and install age, forces removal of entries whose uninstaller is broken, and then scans for the folders and registry keys left behind. Process manager shows what is running with the file path and a reputation check, which is how you work out what that unnamed process actually is.

Additional tools cover disk repair, a driver backup, memory optimisation, a context menu manager for the right click menu that has grown to thirty entries, and an internet connection tuning panel.

Scheduling and running it quietly

Maintenance can run on a schedule, at startup, or when the machine is idle, and it can be set to act automatically or only to report. For a machine used by somebody who will not run maintenance themselves, the idle time automatic mode is the sensible setting.

The program itself is deliberately light. There is no background scanner consuming memory, no notification tray icon unless you enable one, and no upgrade panel wedged into the interface since the Pro features are already active here.

A note on expectations

Cleaning tools do not make a slow computer fast. If a machine is slow because it has a mechanical hard disk or four gigabytes of memory, no amount of registry cleaning changes that. What this does fix is the accumulation problem: startup entries, leftover services, junk that grows without limit and browser components nobody chose.

Used with that expectation it is genuinely useful and, more importantly, safe, because everything it removes it records first. Used as a magic speed button it will disappoint, as every tool of this kind does.

System requirements

Installing it

1. Unpack and run setup as administrator.
2. Decline any bundled extras in the setup screens if they are offered.
3. Turn off real time protection during install since the licensing module is patched.
4. Run the one click scan and read the results before letting it act. Do not blind click apply the first time.
5. Set a schedule if you want it, or leave it manual.
