Overview

ETABS is the analysis package written specifically for buildings, and that specialisation is the whole argument for it. The model is organised by story rather than by elevation, so a floor plan drawn once is replicated up the structure with the changes that each level needs. Diaphragms, shear walls, coupling beams, floor systems and lateral resisting frames are objects the software understands, which means the results come back organised the way a building engineer thinks about them: story drift, story shear, overturning, and the load path down to the foundation.

The Ultimate tier includes the nonlinear analysis capabilities, the performance based design workflows and the detailing output. This installation has the licensing handled locally, so there is no hardware key expected, no licence server address to configure and no checkout at start-up.

Modelling by story

A model is built as a set of stories with a similar story concept, so an edit to a typical floor propagates to every floor that shares it while the ones you have made unique stay unique. Grids drive placement, plans are drawn in 2D and reviewed in 3D, and geometry can be brought in from a drawing or a building model rather than drawn again.

Floors are shell objects with membrane or shell behaviour and semi rigid or rigid diaphragm assignment, which is the choice that most affects how lateral load distributes. Walls are area objects with meshing handled automatically and openings cut as geometry rather than modelled around. Sloped floors, ramps, transfer levels and podium structures are all handled without tricks.

Loading and analysis

Gravity loading is applied to areas and distributes to supporting members automatically. Lateral loading comes from the code based wind and seismic generators for the major codes, with the parameters exposed so the assumptions can be checked. Modal analysis with the eigen or Ritz approach, response spectrum, linear and nonlinear time history, and pushover analysis are all present in this tier.

Construction sequence analysis matters on tall buildings and is included, so the model can be solved as it would actually be built rather than as if the whole frame appeared at once. Cracked section properties, P-Delta effects and accidental torsion are handled as analysis settings rather than manual adjustments.

Design, detailing and output

Design runs against the steel, concrete, composite beam, composite column and shear wall codes for the major national standards, with the results shown as coloured utilisation on the model so the problem areas are visible before any table is opened. Section optimisation iterates the design and reports what it changed.

The detailing module produces drawings from the designed model: plans, elevations, sections, reinforcement layouts and schedules, exported to the drawing formats for finishing. Results tables can be filtered, sorted and exported to a spreadsheet, and the report builder assembles the whole submission with the sections you choose in the order you choose them.

Installing it

  1. Unpack to a short local path.
  2. Turn off real time protection for the install.
  3. Run setup as administrator and accept the default component set.
  4. Do not run the licence configuration utility. The state is already applied and running it will clear it.
  5. Launch ETABS. It opens to the start page with no key or server prompt.

Questions about this release

Does it need a hardware key?

No. The licensing is handled locally in this build, so there is no key, no server address and no checkout at start-up.

Can models be exchanged with other analysis software?

Through the neutral structural exchange formats, yes, with the usual caveat that meshing and diaphragm assumptions do not always survive the trip.

Is the nonlinear capability included?

Yes, this is the Ultimate tier, so nonlinear time history and pushover are both present.

Why does a nonlinear run take so long?

Because it is genuinely expensive. Memory is usually the limiting factor before the processor is, and 16 GB is not enough for a large time history model.

Twenty eight story model, opened and solved without any licence dialog. Utilisation colouring is how I check everything now.

Skipped the licence utility as the notes say. Straight in.

Sloped diaphragm crash is gone. That was blocking a podium model for me.
