Overview

SketchUp is very good at getting a building or an object modelled quickly and completely uninterested in making it look real. V-Ray is the layer that closes that gap. It installs into SketchUp as a toolbar and a set of panels, and from there it handles materials, lights, cameras and the actual rendering, producing images that go into a client presentation rather than a modelling review.

This is version 7 for the current SketchUp releases, with the licensing handled ahead of time so there is no login and no license server on the network. The material library, the light types, the proxy and scatter tools, the frame buffer with its full compositing controls and both render engines are all present. Rendered output carries no watermark at any resolution.

Materials and lighting

The material system is physically based, which in practice means you describe a surface by what it is rather than by faking how it looks. Roughness, metalness, index of refraction, coating, sheen and subsurface scattering are all exposed, and the bundled library covers the common architectural cases already: concrete, brick, glass, metals, timber, fabrics and the various ground surfaces. Dragging one onto a face is usually enough to start.

For lighting, the dome light with a high dynamic range environment is the fastest route to a believable exterior, and the sun and sky system tied to the model's geographic orientation handles the rest. Interior work uses the rectangular, spherical and IES profile lights, the last of which reads real fixture data so a specified downlight throws the pattern it actually throws. Light mixing in the frame buffer lets you rebalance every source after the render has finished rather than resubmitting it.

The two render engines

The processor engine is the accurate one and the one to use for a final image on a machine with a lot of cores. It handles every feature without exception and scales more or less linearly with core count. The graphics card engine is dramatically faster for interactive work, since it updates the preview as you move the camera or adjust a material, and it now supports nearly the whole feature set rather than a subset.

The usual workflow uses both. Light and material decisions get made in the interactive graphics card view where feedback is immediate, and the final frame goes to whichever engine the hardware favours. Both write to the same frame buffer with the same controls, so nothing has to be set up twice.

Handling heavy scenes

Proxy objects are the answer to a model that has become too heavy to navigate. Trees, furniture, crowds and any repeated detailed geometry get converted to a lightweight stand-in in the viewport and load their real geometry only at render time. A landscaped site plan that would otherwise be unworkable stays responsive.

The scatter tool distributes objects across a surface with control over density, rotation and scale variation, which covers planting, gravel and any other case where placing thousands of instances by hand is not an option. Combined with proxies, a fully planted exterior scene stays inside what a normal workstation can carry.

Installing it

  1. Install or confirm a supported SketchUp release first. The plug-in has nothing to attach to otherwise.
  2. Close SketchUp completely, including any background process left running.
  3. Suspend real time protection and run the installer as administrator.
  4. Pick the SketchUp version to install into when the setup asks. It will list every one it finds.
  5. Open SketchUp, enable the V-Ray toolbar from the view menu, and render the sample scene once to confirm both engines start.

Questions about this release

Does SketchUp need to be installed first?

Yes. This is a plug-in, not a standalone program, and the installer needs a host version to attach to.

Which render engine should I use?

Graphics card for interactive work and previews, processor for final frames on a machine with a high core count. Both share the same settings.

Is there a watermark on renders?

No. Output is clean at every resolution and in every render element.

Can I use materials from an older V-Ray scene?

Yes, older scenes convert on open. Some legacy material types are remapped to their physical equivalents and may need a check.

Interactive view on the GPU makes material work about five times faster than it used to be. Final frames still go to CPU here.
