Overview
This is the whole ANSYS product line installed together rather than the two or three solvers a typical seat is entitled to. Structural mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, thermal, electromagnetics, optics and the systems level tools all sit inside one workbench environment where geometry, meshing and results are shared between them. That shared environment is the point, since a thermal result can drive a structural study without exporting anything.
The licensing is applied locally, which removes both the licence server and the solver core limit that normally caps how many processors a run can use. On a machine with a lot of cores that is the single biggest practical difference, since a solve that would be metered down to a handful of processors instead uses everything available.
The workbench environment
Workbench is the front end that ties the products together. An analysis is built as a schematic, geometry feeding a mesh feeding a solver feeding results, and each block updates downstream when something upstream changes. Parameters can be promoted out of any block and driven from a table, which is how design of experiments and optimisation studies are set up without scripting.
Geometry comes in through the CAD readers, which handle native files from the major mechanical packages as well as the neutral formats, with associativity so a design change in the CAD system updates the simulation model. SpaceClaim is included for direct geometry repair and simplification, which is where most of the preparation time actually goes on real models.
Meshing and the solvers
Meshing covers automatic tetrahedral, sweep and hex dominant methods for structural work, and the polyhedral and cut cell approaches used for fluids. Inflation layers for boundary layer resolution are handled with proper growth control, and the mesh quality metrics report before the solve rather than after it fails.
On the structural side there is static and transient analysis, modal, harmonic, buckling, explicit dynamics for impact and drop, and full nonlinear material and contact behaviour. Fluids covers the pressure and density based solvers with the whole turbulence model set, multiphase, combustion and moving mesh. Electromagnetics handles low and high frequency, motors, antennas and signal integrity. Thermal couples into all of it.
Running solves and reading results
Without a core restriction, solve time scales with the machine rather than with the entitlement. Distributed solving across the cores of a single workstation is configured in the solver settings and needs nothing else set up. Memory is usually the real limit on a large model, and the solver reports its requirement before it starts so a run does not fail four hours in.
Results post processing runs in the same environment with contour plots, vector fields, streamlines, animations and probes, and everything can be scripted for repeated studies. Reports generate from the results tree with the figures and tables embedded, which is more useful than it sounds on a project where the same study is re-run with different inputs a dozen times.

Questions about this release
Is the solver core count limited?
No. That restriction comes from the licence, and licensing here is applied locally, so a solve uses every core the machine has.
Are all the products included?
Yes. Structural, fluids, thermal, electromagnetics, optics and the systems tools all install together.
Do I need a licence server?
No, nothing is checked out over the network and nothing can fail mid solve.
Can I open models from previous releases?
Yes. Older project archives open and migrate, though a project saved in this release will not open in an earlier one.
Comments
Every product in the list installed. Took most of an afternoon but it went through without an error.
SpaceClaim included is what makes it usable. Model prep is most of the job on real geometry.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
All cores on the solve, no metering. A run that took nine hours at work finished in under three here.
