Overview

Media Encoder is the program that does the waiting so the editor does not have to. Sequences and compositions queue into it and render in the background while you keep cutting, footage transcodes into edit friendly formats or into proxies, and a watch folder turns a drop into a finished file without anyone touching the interface. On its own it is unglamorous. Alongside an editor it changes how a working day is structured.

This build is licensed, with hardware acceleration and the full preset library enabled and no watermark on the output. It works standalone as a batch transcoder as well, which is a perfectly good reason to install it even without the rest of the suite.

The queue

Anything sent from the editor or the compositor arrives as a queue item with its own preset, output path and settings, and the whole queue can be started, paused and reordered. A failed item reports why rather than silently stopping the batch, which is a small thing that saves an overnight render.

Multiple outputs from one source is where the time is saved. A single sequence can produce a delivery file, a review copy and a set of stills in one pass rather than three separate exports.

Transcoding and proxies

Camera footage in a heavily compressed format is painful to edit and pleasant to transcode into an intermediate. Media Encoder does that in bulk with the folder structure preserved, which is the standard first step on a shoot with a lot of material.

Proxy generation ties directly into the editor, producing lower resolution copies that the timeline swaps in transparently. Ingest presets can run this automatically on import, so the material is ready by the time the card has finished copying.

Watch folders and presets

A watch folder pairs a directory with a preset. Anything dropped into it is encoded and moved to an output folder without further interaction, which is how a small shop handles a steady stream of the same conversion.

Presets are shareable files. Building a house delivery preset once and giving it to everyone removes an entire category of inconsistent output.

Questions about this release

Do I need it if I have the editor?

Not strictly. The editor exports on its own. Media Encoder is for keeping that work off your machine's foreground and for batch jobs.

Does it work standalone?

Yes, as a batch transcoder, with no other program installed.

Is hardware encoding on?

Yes, where the card supports it. It is selectable per preset.

Does it need to match the editor version?

Yes. Queue handoff between different years does not work.

Watch folder handles our whole review copy pipeline. Set once, forgotten about.

Queue from the 2026 editor works. Tried it with an older one first and it would not link, as expected.

Multiple outputs in one pass roughly halved our delivery time.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
