Overview
After Effects is a layer based compositor that most motion graphics work passes through at some point. Titles, lower thirds, animated logos, screen replacements, cleanup, tracking, rotoscoping and the kind of effect work that a timeline editor cannot do are all built here. It is slower to learn than an editor and considerably more capable once learned, and the 2026 build is the fastest it has been since multi frame rendering arrived.
The archive is the full offline installer with the licensing handled ahead of time. Third party plug-ins install into it normally, the render queue writes clean files with no mark, and the dynamic link bridge to Premiere works both directions provided both programs are from the same year.
Compositing and animation
The composition model is unchanged: layers, transforms, masks, track mattes, blending modes, and expressions on any animatable property. What has improved is the interaction speed. Multi frame rendering spreads previews across every available core, and the cache is now smart enough to keep partial results when an upstream layer is nudged rather than throwing the whole thing away.
Shape layers have gained proper boolean operations and a stroke taper that does not require a plug-in. The graph editor handles multi property selections without the value scale jumping, which removes one of the longest standing daily irritations in the program.
Tracking, roto and 3D
The 3D camera tracker and the planar mocha bridge are both present and both work offline. Roto Brush produces a usable matte on a moving subject in a fraction of the time hand rotoscoping takes, and the refinement pass now keeps fine edges like hair without the boiling that older versions produced.
The 3D workspace has real geometry import, image based lighting, and a viewport that is close enough to the final render to judge a shot in. It is not a replacement for a dedicated 3D package, but for a logo on a plinth with a moving camera it removes the round trip entirely.
Rendering and handoff
The render queue writes intermediates and image sequences directly. For delivery formats the composition is normally queued to Media Encoder, which is listed separately on this site and is optional. Both paths export clean in this build.
Expressions, essential properties and motion graphics templates make a composition reusable. A template built here drops into a Premiere timeline with its exposed controls intact, which is how most title packages get handed to an editor.

Installing it
- Unpack the archive locally. Network paths will fail partway through.
- Turn off real time protection before running setup.
- Install as administrator and choose the language.
- Point the disk cache at a fast drive with at least 100 GB free in preferences.
- Install any third party plug-ins after the main program, not before.

Release history
- Cache now retains partial results when an upstream layer changes
- Roto Brush edge refinement reworked for hair
- Fixed graph editor value scale jumping on multi property selections
- Shape layer boolean operations added
- 3D viewport preview brought closer to final render
- Multi frame rendering thread allocation fixed on high core count machines
- Reduced project open time on compositions with heavy expressions
Questions about this release
Do third party plug-ins install normally?
Yes. The plug-in folder is in its usual place inside the program directory and installers find it without help.
Does dynamic link with Premiere work?
Yes, when both are from the 2026 cycle. Cross year linking is not supported by the programs themselves.
Is multi frame rendering enabled?
Yes, it is on by default and uses every available core unless you cap it in preferences.
Why are previews still slow?
Almost always the disk cache. Put it on an SSD with real free space and give it a large allocation.
Comments
Plug-ins from my old install dropped straight in. Renders clean, no mark.
32 GB and it still eats everything, but that is After Effects, not the release.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
Roto on a hair edge actually holds now. Saved me a full day on a cleanup shot.
