Adobe Character Animator 2026

Drives a layered 2D character from your webcam and microphone in real time, so a puppet blinks, lip syncs and turns its head as you perform it rather than as you keyframe it.

Overview

Character Animator does something none of the other animation tools do: it performs. Point a webcam at your face, talk into a microphone, and a layered illustration moves with you, matching your head turns, your eyebrows, your blinks and the shapes your mouth makes. What comes out is animation with the timing of a live performance, which is very hard to reach by keyframing and almost automatic here.

The workflow starts in a layered artwork file, usually built in Photoshop or Illustrator, where layers are named according to a convention that tells the program which layer is the left eyebrow and which is the mouth shape for an F sound. Import that, and the rigging is mostly done for you. This build is the full offline installer with the licensing handled, so there is no trial counter and no sign in on first launch, and the bundled puppet library is included rather than downloaded.

Performance capture

Face tracking drives head position and rotation, eyebrow height, eye direction, blinks and mouth shape from an ordinary webcam. Nothing specialised is needed, though even lighting on your face makes a large difference to how stable the tracking is. Lip sync analyses the audio and selects from a set of mouth shapes, which can be recorded live or generated from an existing recording afterwards.

Body movement is handled through the same performance where you want it, with the arms and torso following the head, or with a separate control layer that you drive with the mouse or a game controller. Triggers assign specific poses, props and expressions to keyboard keys, which is how you get a character to hold up a sign, change costume or make an exaggerated face on cue.

Rigging without a rigging degree

Layers named to the convention get picked up automatically, so a puppet built to the template is usable within a minute of import. Beyond that, the rigging tools cover handles for pinning and dragging, a dangle behaviour for hair and earrings that follows the head with physics, a walk behaviour that generates a cycle from a small set of leg poses, and independent replacement sets for swapping arms or heads.

The physics behaviours are what make a simple puppet look alive. Dangle on the right layers, a little bit of squash and stretch on movement, and a breathing idle turn a flat drawing into something that reads as present in the scene even when it is doing nothing.

Recording, layering and cleanup

A take records the performance onto the timeline as a set of tracks, one per behaviour, so you can record the face in one pass, the arm movement in a second, and the triggers in a third, blending them together. Bad moments are trimmed at the track level rather than requiring the whole take to be redone.

Recorded tracks can be converted to keyframes for manual correction, which matters when the tracker did something odd for half a second. Scenes are composed with backgrounds and multiple puppets, and the whole scene exports directly or goes to Premiere and After Effects through dynamic link.

Where it is used

Live broadcast segments, because it runs in real time and can be fed straight into a streaming setup as a camera source. Explainer videos and social clips, because a talking character is faster to produce this way than by any other method. And rough animatics, where the point is to get a scene's timing and delivery down quickly before committing to a slower pipeline.

It is not a replacement for a full character animation package on a project where every frame is designed. It is a very good answer to the far more common problem of needing a talking character by Thursday.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit
ProcessorIntel or AMD quad core, 2.5 GHz or faster
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended
Graphics2 GB VRAM minimum, 4 GB for smooth live preview

Installing it

  1. Unpack the archive to a path without spaces.
  2. Disable real time protection for the install.
  3. Run setup as administrator and choose the interface language.
  4. Launch once, dismiss the start screen, and confirm no trial counter is shown.
  5. Set your camera and microphone in preferences before opening a puppet, since it defaults to whatever Windows lists first.

Questions about this release

Do I need special hardware?

No. An ordinary webcam and microphone are enough. Even lighting on your face improves tracking more than a better camera would.

Where do puppets come from?

You build them as layered Photoshop or Illustrator files with layers named to the convention, or you start from the bundled library and redraw the parts.

Can I fix a bad moment in a take?

Yes. Trim the track, record over that section, or convert the track to keyframes and correct it by hand.

Does it work with Premiere and After Effects?

Yes, through dynamic link, provided both are builds from the same year.

Built a puppet in Photoshop with the naming convention and it rigged itself. Talking within ten minutes.

Live camera output straight into the streaming software. Runs at full rate on a 3060.

No sign in, no counter. Lip sync from a recorded voice track is better than doing it by hand, easily.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
