Overview

Camera Raw is the part of the Adobe photo pipeline that most people use daily without thinking of it as a separate program. It is the panel that opens when a raw file is dragged into Photoshop, and it carries the demosaic, the profile handling, the tone and colour controls and the local adjustment tools. Everything the same company's photo cataloguing application does to a raw file, this does, because it is the same engine underneath a different interface.

This installer exists for a specific problem: a Photoshop or Bridge install whose bundled Camera Raw is older than the camera you just bought, so the raw files open as unsupported. Installing this replaces the plug-in in place, bringing the sensor profile library up to date without touching the host application. It also installs the current lens correction database, which is worth doing on its own.

Profiles and the raw conversion itself

Every raw file starts as a mosaic of single colour sensor readings and has to be interpolated into a full colour image, and the quality of that step sets the ceiling for everything after it. This version's demosaic handles fine repeating detail, fabric weave and architectural screens, with noticeably fewer colour artefacts than older releases, and the enhance option reconstructs at higher resolution when a crop needs more pixels than the sensor produced.

Camera profiles determine the starting colour rendering. The adobe standard and the camera matching profiles are both present for every supported body, along with the creative profiles that behave like film stocks. Profiles apply before any tone adjustment, so choosing one first and editing afterwards is the order that avoids fighting yourself.

Tone, colour and local adjustment

The basic panel covers exposure, contrast, the four tonal ranges, texture, clarity and dehaze, and the point curve sits underneath for anything the sliders cannot reach. Colour mixing is available per hue range in both a simple and a point sampled mode, and colour grading applies separate tints to shadows, midtones and highlights with a blending control between them.

Local adjustments are mask based and the mask tools are the real advance of recent versions. Subject, sky, background and object masks are generated automatically and can be intersected or subtracted with brushes, gradients and range masks, so a selective edit that used to take careful brushwork now takes two clicks and a refinement. Every mask carries the full adjustment set rather than a reduced one.

Correction, noise and output

Lens profiles correct distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration automatically for a recognised body and lens pair, and manual controls handle the rest. Geometry correction straightens converging verticals either from guides you draw or automatically, which is the fastest fix for architectural work shot without a shift lens.

Noise reduction includes both the traditional luminance and colour sliders and the machine learning denoise that writes a new raw file with the noise removed before any other processing. That path is slow and needs a capable graphics card, but on high sensitivity frames the result is not comparable to slider based reduction. Output goes back to the host application as a layer, a smart object, or straight to a file.

Installing it

  1. Close Photoshop and Bridge completely, including any background process.
  2. Unpack the archive and run the plug-in installer as administrator.
  3. Let it detect the installed host applications and replace the existing plug-in.
  4. Reopen the host and open a raw file to confirm the panel reports the new version.
  5. If the panel still reports the old version, check that the host is a supported release in the notes.

Questions about this release

Do I need this if my Photoshop is current?

Probably not. It matters when the host is older than your camera, or when you want the newest lens profiles without replacing the whole application.

Will it break my existing edits?

No. Edit settings are stored per file and are read by the newer engine. Older process versions are retained so an old file renders as it did.

Why is denoise so slow?

It runs a full reconstruction on the graphics card and writes a new raw file. On a card below the recommended memory it falls back to a much slower path.

Which host versions are supported?

The compatibility list is in the notes inside the archive. Installing against an unsupported host leaves the old plug-in in place rather than breaking anything.

New body was opening as unsupported, this fixed it in five minutes without touching Photoshop itself.

Masking tools alone are worth updating for. Sky mask on a bracketed set is instant.

Denoise is slow on my card but the result on high sensitivity frames is not close to the old sliders.
