Overview
Animate is the direct descendant of the program that most of the web's early animation was made in, and it has aged into something quite specific: the best desktop tool for drawing frame by frame animation with a timeline in front of you. Character work, explainer sequences, looping cycles, cut out puppet rigs and interactive content all get built here, and the drawing tools are built for animators rather than borrowed from an illustration program.
This is the full offline installer with the licensing settled beforehand, so it opens on a blank stage rather than a sign-in screen. Every publish target is available, the bone and camera systems are intact, and exported video and image sequences carry no watermark. The updater is removed, so the build does not replace itself.
Drawing and the timeline
The brush is pressure sensitive with a proper taper, and drawings can be made as vectors or as bitmap strokes depending on whether you want the result to scale or to have texture. Onion skinning shows the frames on either side of the one you are drawing, with adjustable range and tint, which is the whole basis of hand drawn animation and something a lot of general purpose software still handles badly.
The timeline is layer based with keyframes, tweens and a graph editor for easing. Classic tweens handle the simple transforms, motion tweens carry a property path you can bend on the stage, and shape tweens interpolate between two drawings with shape hints where the automatic result goes wrong. Frame by frame drawing sits alongside all of it on the same timeline, so a rig can be animated with tweens and then have hand drawn detail added over the top.
Rigging and reuse
The bone tool builds an inverse kinematics chain inside a symbol, which is how cut out character animation is done here. Pose the end of a limb and the joints follow, with rotation limits and spring settings so the motion has some weight to it. Asset warp extends the same idea to a mesh, letting a single drawing bend and stretch without redrawing it.
Symbols remain the organising idea of the whole program. Anything reused becomes a symbol with its own internal timeline, so a walk cycle is drawn once and dropped in wherever it is needed, and a change inside the symbol propagates everywhere it appears. Nested symbols are how a complex scene stays manageable.
Publishing
Output covers video files, image sequences, animated raster formats, sprite sheets with the accompanying data file, and the canvas based web target that produces plain HTML and JavaScript. The sprite sheet output in particular is why game artists keep this program installed, since it packs frames and writes the atlas description in one pass.
For interactive content, the code editor and the actions panel are present with the current runtime, and the layer parenting and camera systems export correctly to the web target. Anything published carries no branding of any kind.

Release history
- Asset warp handle behaviour corrected on rotated symbols
- Fixed sprite sheet export writing an incorrect frame order on nested timelines
- Brush pressure curve now saves per document
- Onion skin tinting reworked for dark stage backgrounds
- Faster publishing to the web canvas target on long timelines
- Bone tool spring settings restored on imported rigs
- Video export presets refreshed
Questions about this release
Can it export a transparent video?
Yes, through the image sequence output with an alpha channel, or through the video presets that support alpha. Flat video formats will not carry it.
Does it still publish for the web?
Yes, to the canvas target, which produces plain HTML and JavaScript with no plug-in involved.
Is a drawing tablet required?
Not required, but frame by frame work with a mouse is painful. Pressure sensitivity is supported on any working tablet driver.
Can I open documents from much older versions?
Yes, legacy documents open and convert. Some very old scripted content will need rewriting for the current runtime.
Comments
Sprite sheets export with the data file in one go, which is exactly what I needed for a game project.
No sign-in screen, no watermark on the video export. Runs fine on a mid range laptop.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
Onion skinning and the brush are still better here than anywhere else for hand drawn work. Installed clean.
