Overview
Nobody installs this by preference. It gets installed because something requires it: a machine whose manufacturer never released drivers for anything newer, an industrial or medical control application certified against this release and no other, a piece of hardware with a driver that was never rebuilt. In those cases the choice is this image or replacing equipment that otherwise works perfectly well.
It is the untouched Professional installer with licensing applied and nothing else changed, in both 32 and 64 bit, offered as a direct download and as a magnet. The 32-bit build is included specifically because a certain amount of the hardware this image ends up on cannot run anything else.
The cases where this is the right image
Driver support is the most common reason. Manufacturers stop publishing drivers, and a laptop or a workstation from that era may have a graphics or chipset driver that exists for this release and for nothing after it. Running a system with a generic driver is possible but usually means no acceleration, wrong resolutions and poor power management.
The second reason is certified software. Control systems, laboratory instruments, machine tools and medical devices are often validated against one specific operating system release, and revalidating is expensive enough that the machine simply stays where it is. Those computers should be off the network and left alone, which this image is perfectly suited to.
Making it tolerable to use
The interface is the thing people remember, and most of it can be settled down in the first ten minutes. The taskbar properties allow booting straight to the desktop and going to the application list instead of the tile screen, which between them remove most of the friction. The rest of the tile interface can then be ignored entirely.
The 8.1 update, which is what this image is rather than the original release, restored a great deal that was missing initially, including a proper search, window snapping behaviour that makes sense on a large display, and the ability to run the tile applications in windows rather than full screen.
Installing and what to expect afterwards
Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger, or burn it if the target machine has an optical drive, which at this vintage it very likely does. Boot from it and choose custom install for a clean system. Activation is applied in the image, so no key is entered at any point.
Drivers come from the manufacturer rather than from the update service, and on hardware of this age the manufacturer's own support page for the specific model is the only reliable source. Mainstream security updating for this release has ended, which is the strongest argument for keeping any machine running it off the open network.
