Overview

There is a class of machine that will never run anything current: a netbook with two gigabytes of memory, a shop floor terminal driving one piece of software, a laptop whose only surviving purpose is a scanner with no modern driver. This image exists for those. It is Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 as the base, with everything that is not needed to boot, network and run applications taken out at the image level rather than disabled afterwards.

The result idles at a small fraction of the memory a stock install uses and boots in a fraction of the time. That comes at a price and the price should be stated plainly: components that were removed cannot be added back later without rebuilding the image. If you need media playback, tablet input or the search indexer, this is the wrong build and the standard image is the right one.

What was taken out

The bundled applications are gone: the media player and its codecs, the photo viewer, the games, the fax and scan front end, the sidebar and its gadgets, and the sample media that nobody has ever opened deliberately. The accessibility stack, tablet input, speech support and the handwriting recognisers are removed, which is where a surprising amount of the size and the background service count lived.

On the service side, the search indexer, superfetch, the diagnostic policy chain, error reporting, the customer experience tasks and remote assistance are stripped rather than set to manual. Scheduled tasks that touch any of the above are removed with them, so nothing wakes up looking for a service that is not there. The result is an idle process list short enough to fit on one screen.

What was kept

Everything needed for real work stays. The full networking stack including wireless and virtual private network clients, the printing subsystem, the remote desktop client and host, the .NET runtimes, the Visual C++ redistributable set, and the driver store for common storage and network controllers so that setup finds a disk without a slipstream step. Group policy and the local security tooling are intact, which is what makes the Professional edition worth using over the home one on a machine that has to join anything.

The servicing stack is left in place so that updates can still be applied from a local package if you need a specific one, though the image ships already rolled up to the last convenience level rather than making you sit through hundreds of individual patches after install.

Installing on old hardware

Write the image to a USB stick with any tool that handles legacy boot sectors, or burn it if the machine only has an optical drive. On genuinely old hardware the legacy boot path is the reliable one. The x86 image is the correct choice below four gigabytes of memory, and the x64 image above it. Both are inside the same archive.

Setup runs unattended past the disk selection step. Licensing is applied during the first boot phase, so the desktop appears already activated with no prompt and no countdown in the corner. Driver installation afterwards is the usual old machine ritual: chipset first, then storage, then network, then everything else.

Installing it

  1. Unpack the archive and pick the x86 or x64 image based on installed memory.
  2. Write the image to a USB stick using a tool that supports legacy boot.
  3. Boot the machine from the stick and delete the existing partition if you want a clean install.
  4. Let setup run to the desktop without interrupting it. It does not ask for a key.
  5. Install chipset and storage drivers first, then network, then the rest.

Questions about this release

Can I add back a removed component later?

No. Removal happens inside the image, so the files are not on disk to enable. If you need any of them, use a standard image instead.

Will modern applications run on it?

Some will, many will not. A great deal of current software dropped support for this platform years ago, and no image trick changes that. This build is for machines running specific older software.

Is the media player really gone?

Yes, along with its codecs. Any standalone player that carries its own decoders works fine, and most of them do.

Which image should I pick?

Below four gigabytes of memory the x86 image is faster and uses less disk. Above it, use x64 so the memory is addressable.

Running on a netbook with 2 GB. Idles around 340 MB. Stock 7 never got near that.

Read the removed list before you download. I needed tablet input and had to go back to the standard image, my own fault.
