Overview
Studio One arrived late to a field full of established recording programs and won people over on workflow. Almost everything is drag and drop: an effect onto a track, a track onto a bus, a loop from the browser onto the timeline, a mixer channel onto another to copy its settings. Small frictions that other programs have accumulated over twenty years of backward compatibility simply are not here, and the cumulative effect over a session is substantial.
The Pro edition adds the Project page, which is a mastering environment inside the same application. Finished songs are assembled into an album, processed, sequenced with gaps and fades, and exported, and every song stays linked to its own session so a fix upstream flows through to the master. This build is posted with the licensing handled, so there is no activation step, no track count limit, and the full included instrument and effect set is present.
Recording and editing
Audio recording handles unlimited tracks at any sample rate the interface offers, with comping across takes on lanes, transient detection and quantisation, time stretching that keeps its quality on large changes, and pitch correction both automatic and manual. Melodyne integration is at the audio engine level rather than as a plug-in, so pitch editing is a right click on a clip.
MIDI editing covers the expected piano roll, drum editor, step sequencing, chord track that can transpose the whole arrangement, and a scale filter that keeps a performance in key. The arranger track lets you move whole song sections around, which is how a verse and chorus get reordered without cutting anything by hand.
Mixing
The console is a full mixer with unlimited buses, sends, VCA style control faders, and a channel editor for building parallel processing chains without patching. Every included effect is there in the mixer, and third party plug-ins in the standard formats load alongside them.
The included effect set is genuinely good rather than a token gesture: compressors of several characters, a console emulation, equalisers, reverbs including a convolution one, delays, saturation, amp simulation for guitar and bass, and metering that covers loudness standards. A mix finished entirely with the bundled processing does not sound like a compromise.
The Project page
Mastering usually means exporting a mix, opening a different program, processing, and repeating that whole loop every time a mix note comes back. The Project page removes the loop. Songs sit in an album sequence with their own processing chain, and each one keeps a live link to the session that produced it.
When a mix changes, the master updates. Track gaps, fades, crossfades, track markers and the metadata for the release are all set here, and the output goes out as files or a disc image with the loudness matched across the album. For anyone releasing music this collapses two applications and a lot of file shuffling into one page.
Instruments, loops and live use
The bundled instruments cover a sampler with a large included library, an analogue style synthesiser, a modelled electric piano and organ, a drum machine, and an impact style pad sampler. The loop and sound content library is substantial and the browser previews everything in time and in key with the current project before you drag it in.
The Show page turns the same application into a live performance rig, with setlists, patch changes, backing tracks and the same instruments and effects you produced with. For a band that produced its own record, playing it live from the same program with the same sounds is a genuinely useful trick.

Questions about this release
What does the Project page do that exporting cannot?
It keeps each song linked to its session. Fix a mix and the master updates without exporting and reimporting anything.
Are there track count limits in this build?
No. The Pro features are unlocked, so tracks, buses and the included content are all unrestricted.
Do I need an audio interface?
For recording, yes, and for low latency monitoring. For arranging and mixing with headphones the built in sound device will do.
Will my existing plug-ins work?
Yes, the standard formats load alongside the included set. Scan the folders on first launch.
Comments
Included amp models are good enough that I stopped reaching for the outboard for demos.
Full content library installed, no activation step. Drag and drop everything, it is faster to work in than what I came from.
Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
Project page is the reason I moved. Album sequenced and loudness matched without leaving the program.
