Overview
The reason this pack has existed for two decades is that media playback on Windows has never quite worked out of the box. A file arrives in a container the system does not know, encoded with something the built in decoders do not implement, with subtitles in a format nothing reads, and the result is either an error or a video with no sound. Installing this once fixes that class of problem permanently.
The pack carries decoders for essentially every audio and video format in circulation, the splitters that read the containers they come in, a configured player, subtitle rendering, and the filter management that stops the components from arguing with each other. It is assembled and tested as a set rather than collected as parts, which is what distinguishes it from installing decoders individually and hoping.
What is in the pack
Decoders cover the modern video formats including the recent high efficiency ones, the older material that a long standing collection is full of, and the audio side from lossless formats through the multichannel cinema formats to the assorted things that turn up in old files. Hardware accelerated decoding is enabled where the graphics card supports it, which is what keeps high resolution playback from loading the processor.
Splitters read the containers, which is a separate problem from decoding and the more common cause of a file that plays with no sound or no picture. The pack's splitters handle the containers people actually have, including the awkward ones with unusual stream arrangements or chapter structures.
The included player is configured out of the box rather than left at defaults, with sensible key bindings, a subtitle renderer that handles styled subtitles properly, and a video renderer chosen to match what the machine can do. Audio pass through to a receiver is available for the encoded surround formats.
Choosing an installation variant
Four variants are offered. Basic covers video playback with the essentials and nothing else. Standard adds the player and the extras most people expect and is the right choice for the large majority. Full adds encoders and the components a video editor or an encoding tool might call on. Mega adds the professional filter sets on top of that.
If you are not sure, take Standard. If a video editing or encoding program on the machine complains about a missing component, move up to Full. Mega is for a machine doing production work where an application specifically asks for one of its components.
The installer offers a simple mode and an advanced one. The advanced mode exposes every component and preference, which is worth walking through once on a machine you care about, since the defaults there decide which renderer is used and that has a real effect on playback quality.
Coexisting with what is already installed
The installer detects previously installed codec packs and offers to remove them, which you should accept. Two packs on one machine is the classic cause of a system where playback worked yesterday and does not today, because the filter priorities changed underneath. One pack, properly installed, is stable indefinitely.
Store applications and browsers use their own decoders and are unaffected either way. Anything using the system filter graph, which is most standalone players and every older application, picks these components up automatically. A tool is included for inspecting which filters were used to play a given file, which is how you diagnose a stubborn one rather than reinstalling and hoping.

Installing it
- Unpack the archive and run the installer as administrator.
- Accept the offer to remove any previously installed codec pack.
- Choose the variant, Standard unless you have a reason not to.
- Use the advanced mode once and check the video renderer selection.
- Play a file of each type you care about and confirm both picture and sound.
- If a file misbehaves, use the filter inspection tool rather than reinstalling.

Which variant should I install?
Standard, unless a video editing or encoding program on the machine asks for something it does not include, in which case take Full.
Can I keep my existing codec pack?
No, and the installer will offer to remove it. Two packs on one machine is the usual cause of playback that stops working for no visible reason.
Does it affect my browser?
No. Browsers and store applications use their own decoders. This covers everything using the system filter graph.
A file still will not play properly.
Use the included filter inspection tool to see which components handled it. That tells you what to change, which reinstalling does not.
Is hardware acceleration on by default?
Yes, where the card supports it. It can be turned off in the configuration if a specific file misbehaves with it.

Subtitle encoding detection fix sorted a pile of old files that were showing nonsense characters.
Pass through to the receiver works properly again. That was broken for me two versions back.
