Overview

PowerDVD is the last serious disc player left on the desktop, and that alone keeps it installed on machines with an optical drive. It plays the physical formats with their menus, chapters, angles and audio track selection intact, which nothing else on Windows reliably does any more. Around that it has grown into a full media application: a library that indexes local and network video, music and photos, playback of essentially any file format, casting to a television, and a set of enhancement filters that do a genuinely good job on old low resolution material.

The Ultra tier posted here has the high resolution disc support, the lossless audio decoding, the enhancement suite and the streaming features all enabled. There is no sign-in, no subscription component and no trial period, and the advertising panel that the vendor's own build shows in the library view has been removed.

Disc and file playback

Disc playback covers the standard and high resolution physical formats with full menu navigation, bonus content, multiple angles and the complete audio track and subtitle selection. Bookmarks survive ejecting the disc, so a film watched across two evenings resumes where it stopped. Region handling is what it is, and the software does not pretend otherwise.

File playback handles the container and codec formats you are likely to have, including the high dynamic range profiles with proper tone mapping to a standard display when the monitor cannot show them. Audio decoding includes the lossless and object based formats with bitstream passthrough to a receiver, or downmix to whatever the machine actually has. Subtitle files are found automatically alongside a video and can be styled, resized and offset in time.

The library and network playback

The library indexes local folders and network shares, pulls in titles and metadata for films and series, and presents everything in one place with resume positions tracked per item. Playlists work across sources, so a locally stored file and one on a network drive sit in the same list.

Streaming works in both directions. Content on the machine can be pushed to a television or a compatible device on the network, and content on a network media server appears in the library as if it were local. There is a mobile companion path for pulling media from a phone on the same network without cabling it.

Enhancement and playback quality

The enhancement suite is the reason to use this over a plain player on a large screen. Upscaling reconstructs detail rather than only interpolating, and on a standard definition source shown at 4K the difference is not subtle. Denoising cleans up compression artefacts from old encodes, colour enhancement lifts flat transfers, and there is a frame interpolation option for smoothing motion that you will either love or immediately turn off.

Audio enhancement includes a virtual surround for headphone listening, dialogue clarity for films mixed with the speech buried, and a normalisation option that stops a quiet drama and a loud action scene needing different volume settings. All of it is per profile, so a headphone profile and a receiver profile can be switched between without reconfiguring.

System requirements

Installing it

1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
2. Turn off real time protection for the install.
3. Run setup as administrator and decline the optional cloud component if it is offered.
4. Launch the player once and set the audio output to match your hardware before playing anything.
5. No sign-in or key is requested and the library view carries no advertising panel.
