Overview

The neural filter panel in the raster editor is not shipped with its models. The panel is present, the filter names are listed, and each one downloads its model on first use through an account attached to the installation. On a machine that is offline, or on a build where that account path is not available, the panel is a list of things you cannot run. This pack solves that by installing the models locally.

Once the models are in place the filters work exactly as they are documented, running on the local machine with no connection involved. That is worth having beyond the offline case, since a local model responds immediately rather than queuing behind whatever else is happening at the other end of a connection.

What the filters actually do

Skin smoothing and portrait work are the most used. Skin smoothing separates texture from tone rather than blurring, so it can be pushed reasonably far before it starts to look artificial. Smart portrait adjusts expression, gaze direction, head angle and apparent age with sliders, and is best used in small amounts, since the failure mode at high settings is instantly recognisable and unpleasant.

Colorize takes a monochrome image and produces a plausible colour version, with the ability to place colour hints on specific regions where the automatic result guesses wrong. It is genuinely good on portraits and street scenes, and less reliable on anything where the correct colour is arbitrary rather than typical, which is a fair description of the underlying problem rather than a fault of the implementation.

Depth blur generates a depth map and blurs by distance, giving a background separation that respects the actual geometry of the scene. Landscape mixer transfers seasonal and time of day characteristics between images. Style transfer applies the visual character of one image to another. Super zoom, harmonisation of a pasted element to its new background, JPEG artefact removal and photo restoration on scanned damage round out the set.

Installing the models

The models install into the path the panel checks on startup, which the installer locates from the host application's own configuration. If several versions of the host are installed, the installer will ask which one to target, and the models can be placed for more than one.

After installation the panel lists the filters as available rather than as downloadable, and the toggle for each one enables immediately. There is no first use delay because there is nothing to fetch. If the panel still shows a download prompt, the host is looking at a different path than the one used, which the included notes cover.

The models are large, which is unavoidable. Together they account for the bulk of this download, and they can be installed selectively if only a few of the filters are of interest and disk space matters.

Getting usable results

Every filter here should be treated as a starting point rather than a finished result, and the panel's option to output to a new layer rather than applying in place is the setting to use every time. With the result on its own layer it can be masked back, reduced in opacity, or partially discarded, which is how these get used in real retouching work.

Resolution matters. The models operate at their own internal size and upscale the result, which means a very large image can come back slightly soft in the affected region. Working on a crop at a sensible size and compositing back gives a noticeably better result than running the filter across a full sixty megapixel frame.

The portrait filters in particular reward restraint. A small correction reads as a good photograph. A large one reads as a manipulated photograph, immediately and to everybody.

What you get

  • Smart portrait with expression, gaze, head angle and age controls
  • Colorize with manual colour hints for specific regions
  • Depth blur using a generated depth map
  • Landscape mixer, style transfer and harmonisation
  • Super zoom, artefact removal and scanned photo restoration
  • Selective installation if only some models are wanted

Inside the archive

  • Troubleshooting notes for a panel still showing download prompts

System requirements

Host applicationA compatible raster editor installation from the supported release line
Operating systemWindows 10 version 21H2 or later, Windows 11, 64-bit
ProcessorIntel or AMD with SSE 4.2
Memory16 GB recommended, the models are memory hungry
Graphics4 GB VRAM minimum, 8 GB for comfortable use
Storage8 GB free for the full model set

Installing it

  1. Close the host application before starting.
  2. Unpack the archive and suspend real time protection.
  3. Run the installer, which will detect the host installation and its model path.
  4. If several host versions are installed, choose which to target, or select more than one.
  5. Choose the full model set or select individual models if disk space is limited.
  6. Open the host, open the neural filter panel, and confirm the filters show as available rather than downloadable.

Questions about this release

Why does the panel want to download models at all?

Because the host ships the panel without them. This pack puts them in the path the panel checks, so nothing needs fetching.

Does it work without a connection?

Yes, entirely. That is the point of installing the models locally.

The panel still shows download prompts.

The host is checking a different path than the installer used. The included notes cover locating the correct one and moving the models.

Can I install only some of the models?

Yes. The installer allows selection, which is worth doing if disk space is tight and you only use a few filters.

Why is my result slightly soft?

The models work at an internal size and upscale. Run the filter on a crop at a sensible size and composite it back rather than across a very large frame.

Machine has no connection by policy. Panel was useless before this, works completely now.

Output to a new layer every time and mask back. Used that way the skin filter is genuinely good.

Installed to a non default host path and the detection found it this time. Was the reason I skipped the last version.

Comments are read before they appear. If a build stops working, say so here and it gets rebuilt rather than quietly left up.
